Went to open the bonnet this morning and the cable let loose, I don't know if it snapped but I'd say it unhinged.

How do I now open the bonnet?

unscrew the grill

I had a bit of a look and got my hand up there even with a screwdriver but couldn't really see what to slide across.

What's the process?

there is a lever thing on top of the catch plate thingy?
it's got a spring that pulls it back on one side and the cable attaches the other,
so if you can get something up on top of the plate you can push it across from the passenger side

I know exactly what you're talking about, what's best to use to get something on top of the plate?

Bent coathanger piece?

my bonnet cable is rooted aswell.. stil in one piece but just wont pull.. gotta play with the bonnet latch or something..

but i get a flat metal butter knife, slide it between the bonnet and nosecone, about an inch from the tip of the nosecone there is a bit that sticks up that the bonnet cable attaches to, can see it if you shine some light down there.. push that with the knife to your left bout an inch an half and it should pop it.. dont scratch the paint tho..

Hey Darkone, try some WD40 or similar on your catch.

I had the same problem on my ute, had to get someone to sit on the bonnet to open it, but a bit of WD40 and some regular use (doh) and it is now a LOT easier to open.

The butter knife worked a charm - too easy.

The cable did snap, just short of the latch.

What's the go with replacing them, I think if I go to the wreckers I could risk getting one just as short or with a short life-span.

Are there re-pro models, aftermarket or just go with a new cable out of a Commo or something?

Thoughts?

if you got enough cable to spare you may be able to just trim the end off the outer cable and hook it all back up, youll have to move the slack in the outer cable towards the latch as much as you remove from it.. hard to explain..

so if the inner cable snapped 4" from the end, pull the inner cable back so you dont cut it, trim 4" off the outer cable (angle grinder should work), move the outer cable up towards the latch 4" where it originally was, then hook it back up to the latch.

also rare spares do them, go to the store and take yours with you, when i ordered one online i ended up with a hq one that was longer or something so didnt look as neat, pretty easy job swapping them over

You mean that spirally sheath?

I'll look into it.

I almost thought you meant the handle has an outer part you can grind away to push it further in a bit.

also rare spares do them

Do they do a good copy?

Yep, thats exactly how I do it. Proven to work everytime, takes 2 seconds.

I've visited the Rare Spares website and they have a cable with a T-bar handle, they call it a late LX-UC kit. I only want the cable not the kit, does anyone know if they sell them separate? I assume not.

My cable has a round handle and being fussy to keep it original as possible, is there anywhere I could get one similar?

Mine has the round one, I rang Rares and they said they don't make the round ones for Torana.

Supercheap sells them with a round nob, called bonnet release/choke cable or something like that.

Not exactly the same as Torana but closer than that Rare Spares bit of gear.

Cheers.

Cool, I'll look into it.

Rares does have a round knob version for HK-T-G but I'm looking for something like the one I have.

Yep, picked up a choke cable ^ for $22, it works a treat, better than original but that one probably got a bit sticky over the years.

The screw thread is a little larger so the under dash support had to be widened a bit.
