Can anyone help with how to identify early heads from the numbers cast on them?

Best way to pick early Holden V8 heads (HT/HG) is they don't have the top outer accessory hole on the end of the heads. When HQ was released this was added. From casting numbers, HT-HG start with 74. HQ, most HJ, LH and early LX start with 28. And the later red pollution heads found on a few HJ, HX, HZ, VB and late LX start with 99.

Thanks for the info. I have a pair of heads, one starts with 28 and the other with 74 but I can not see any difference.

Look at the end of the head where the accessories bolt on. 74 should have 2 x holes, 28 should have 3. The 74 head shouldn't even have the boss where the 3rd hole is drilled and tapped. If the 74 head you have has the 3rd hole then possibly the casting change was introduced slightly before HQ release, however you would think the cast number would change at that time too.

Thanks for that. You are spot on although I notices that the 74 head has 3 holes one end and only two the other. Are these heads OK to use on the same block? (Red Motor - Q series block)

Where do you find the casting numbers on the red 308 heads. My RH head has 3 holes at the front & my LH head has 4 holes. Does anyone know what vintage they might be.
