Hi everyone,

my car usually starts everytime i turn the key but not this time! firstly i put in the wrong key and it wouldnt go in all the way but i turned it anyway. it turned three quarters of the way, then i used my normal key to get it back to off. so it turned the top part and dont think the inside turned (dont know if this matters). anyway, then the normal key got it to off and tried to start it properly but nothing. i tried the headlights and indicators in the off position but headlights would not go on and no flickers on dash. couple of days later tried again. headlights worked and indicators now worked. now when i tried i would get a click but no crank! also the lead to the battery (positive i think) jumps as i try to turn it over. so i just get a click and a battery lead jump! please help!!

thanks

I would check the battery terminals, then the battery lead connection at the starter and the earth to the motor and body. If your positive lead still arcs up like a snake I think your started may be poling.(internal short).

the starter is only new and i bought it late last year.
could it be electrical or should i check those things?
what should i look for in the above checklist. eg. is it connected?

thanks.

Starter is new or reco?
Lead arcing up is an indication of excessive load on the circuit e.g. a short.
With the fact that you occasionally loose dash lights when you turn the key, also indicates a short.
Next move is to try another starter.

starter is brand new and i bought it late last year. only lost the dash lights for a little while for some reason then got them back when i jiggled the key around and pushed it further in. could there be a loose wire in the ignition that i caused with the wrong key? or the barrel?

thanks

Could it be that rod that goes from ignition barrel and down the steering coloum to the ignition box

might of slipped down a tiny bit,

u turn ur key full, but u cant turn it enough to actiavte the starter?

its a common problem, happened to me before.

its not too hard to fix if this is the case. quite easy on the old torries

Just an idea,

,nathan

I have a similar problem with my street UC. Turn the key to start it, it kicks over. Turn the key to off and remove the key, it still kicks over. There are 3 bolts holding the steering column to the dash. Remove them and you will be able to accesss the electrical side of the ignition switch.

From memory the screws holding the ignition switch are in slotted holes for adjustment.
Maybe your screws are loose? :tease:

ok, so i go to start it today and get the jumping negative battery wire. so i go and take the steering column off to look at the ignition. don't know much but i could see what was going on, it pushes a long wire down the column and it should start. so i mess around with this for a while and nothing really becomes of it. i put it together, try to start and then nothing. just a stupid little noise from the back-up siren?? even when the head lights try to go on it makes a noise (same for the indicators) and they dont work. what's going on?

please help. thanks

Again I say if your main cables are flexing up, you either have a short in your starter or a bad connection on one of your main leads. Is your starter tight to the engine?
Good luck!
