I understand that McLeod, Kelso and Lee of Newcastle
changed their dealer name at some stage.
Does any one have any idea when they changed
to Young and Green, then to Newcastle City Holden?
Must have been after May 1977
as a forum member has a car from there built around then.
Cheers

They were MKL in 1973, and by about 1976/7 they were Young and Green from memory. My dad bought a new 1973 HQ from MKL and a Bedford truck from Young and Green. Young and Green went bust in the early 1990's. I remember going to the parts auction. I'm not sure that Young and Green were not a new Company just like Newcastle City Holden were new. Remember Young and Green were based at Kotara, hence Holden Ave or whatever it was called. Newcastle City Holden are based at the Newcastle branch of Young and Green. They had a few different yards.

My SS was purchased from MKL on 24th August 1977. The log book and purchase papers (which I have) state they were trading as MKL.

That's all I can add but sometimes caryards can trade under two names at once when they are in the process of changing names/owners.

lx5008 is a local and he maybe able to help as his SLR 5000 came from there as well.

Mick.

You could be right,ie that MKL were still going in Newcastle and Young & Green (who were in Kotara) took over one of their Newcastle yards once they shut down. Long time ago.

There's a fair chance they did sell an A9X or two being a large Holden dealer in Newcastle which is a town that loves its torana's.

REDA9X and lx5008 would be the people to talk to, to find out more.

Hi Guys

here is a bit of info about Young and Green.

As at 1981, Young and Green had been in business since about 1922. They had dealers at;
Newcastle: Hunter St West,
Belmont: Pacific Hwy,
Toronto: Carey St,
Maitland: High St,
Gungog: Dowling St.
Hamilton:
Kotara:
Mayfield:
Raymond Terrace:

Maybe Graham can add some info about the MKL Dealership..

cheers
Mick

As an added interest to this post you will probably find that when the dealership changed hands, it also changed dealership code numbers :badabing:

ok straight from the horses mouth. just had a hour long conversation with one of the old managers from MKL.he is now 85 years old and could not get him off the phone talking about the old days. MKL had four shops in the hunter. Newcastle, lambton, maitland and mayfield. some of the stories i was just told would make you laugh. he said in 74 on the release of the LH torana, holden had a big display weekend. he was taking people driving in a brand new purple L34 and blew the motor up and had to have it towed back lol.he said he use to sell about 110 to 140 cars a month just from the Newcastle branch. sadly after the release of the VB commodore they shut the doors due to in house fighting with the three owners M K & L. then he bought into a holden dealer else were. he cant remember what month in 79 but it was early. he said they didn't sell many A9X toranas cause of the price. people would just make up fakes much cheaper. he said we had one guy just fitting flairs and spoilers non stop.so to answer your question my friend yes they sold A9X toranas.

Young & Green went bust mid nineties ( I was made redundant from them 1993) , the King St site was taken over by John Abrahams and changed to Newcastle City Holden and in recent years sold to the Bradstreet Group. I worked for Qualserve P/L which was the name for Young and Greens parts distribution division and later Newcastle City Holden.
