Howdy all, I am currently looking at toranas to buy for my first car and at the moment enquiring about a LX which is an Auto.

However, I would prefer a Manual and am wondering how much it would cost for the parts and labour needed for the conversion.
Also, anything else you can tell me , feel free to do so.

Thanks

There are plenty of people in exactly the same position. You will need the clutch setup and a different brake pedal, box, flywheel? possibly a different speedo gear. Shifter boot instead of the auto selector setup.

I think they use the same tailshaft and possibly gearbox crossmember and it'll cost you $250 or less all up. You should be able to do it all yourself or with the aid of one of your mates who knows a thing or two. I have no idea what a mechanic etc would charge.

EDIT: I'm guessing you'd unbolt the engine, drop the tailshaft, move the engine up against the radiator so you have a bit of room to work with. Drop the crossmember and auto out, bolt the M20 (or similar) up and connect the cables, put the crossmember back in etc.

Make sure the shifter's in the right place and bolt the engine back in its normal position and connect the tailshaft.

Ummm, no. Engine stays put. However it does need to be supported very carefully and gently under the sump. I will have a 6 cyl M20 4 speed box for sale sometime after July this year. That's assuming the 5 speed goes in without too much trouble.

You don't need to support it by the sump, I used a block of wood between the cylinder head and the firewall. Worked fine and you don't have to be careful or have another stand to bang your head on when your underneath the car. Bloody stands only get in the way, I think I still have scars.

thanks , Is anyone able to recall a specialist in Brisbane who would be able to do the conversion professionally?

I had a look in the Yellow Pages , didnt find anyone that says they do transmission conversions but I'm going to ring around anyhow.

Yeah I was thinking a similar thing.
Or I'd just use an engine crane with the chain centered over towards the back and have it support the weight, no chance of pieces of wood falling/breaking, stands falling, sumps getting damaged etc.
Legs of the crane underneath shouldn't really get in the way for working that far back (never did underneath my car anyway).

It's a relatively straightforward job if you're willing to give it a go yourself. :spoton:

Otherwise try areas near slacks creek, always lots of car places down that way.
Pretty sure there is a diff/gearbox shop down [from memory it's actually called the diff/gearbox shop] there that will do it (I know they've done a few full T350 Conversions on Torries). I can't comment on their work as I have never paid anybody to do anything on my car except reco my pressure distributor and v8 booster.
