I'm looking to replaced just the base of my aftermarket air cleaner on my quady with a chromed one.

I found out many years ago that the common as Holley drop down base fouls the carby accell rod that point up where the base sits on the carby. So I made up a band to space the base up about 1/16" to clear. I have since bought a K&N unit and it has the same issue.

The after market stuff appears to be targeted at Holley, although I have seen them listed to the suit Quady (basically all the same hole size). But when I have had a look they all seem to have the same issue.

Has any one else found this? Or is my rod just longer than others?

I just had the same problem. I ended up cutting up my factory Q jet air cleaner base (cut the sides off it and left a 3mm high ridge that fits in the middle of the element base) and putting a 14x3" K&N on it, fits perfectly.

You can buy a spacer to use the Holley base, I think Redline make one.

Hope this helps !

Thanks for the reply Struggler, yeah I made the adapter 20 yrs ago but I thought it might be worth looking into it again. You would think that with all the cars running quady's in Australia and America that a base would be available.

"You can buy a spacer to use the Holley base, I think Redline make one". vagely recall something like that but it was bulky and lifted the filter assembly up way to much. Made the drop down base pointless if I remember correctly.

I like your idea which uses the original factory base but unfortuntely I do not have one and they are becoming too pricey to buy and cut up. Might go talk to a sheet metal worker if nothing else comes up.

Cheers

The Redline one is 20 or 25mm tall, yes it defeats the purpose of having a drop base....

I picked up a damaged base cheap from the local wrecker, cut it, beat it, blasted it and painted it. I like the original as it has nice contours and clears everything while being as low as possible.

I've never had this problem with the standard bases...? I don't use the drop-down ones as I like my air cleaners sitting in the bonnet scoop but they all have the same basic scallop in the shape which seems to clear everything on the various Quadrajets I've used - most of them have more clearance than the factory air cleaner base from what I've seen too. What is the cross-section on yours like?

Thanks for the comments.

The rochester accel pump assemblie stands 15mm higher than the seat onto which the air filter base is located.

The old after market air cleaner allows about 11mm clearance without my backyard spacer and 20mm with it. The new K&N base has 12.5mm clearance total without the spacer.

As I want the largest 14" without going through the bonnet hole as the stock A9X hole will not take a 14" wide filter through it. A drop down base allows 3" with ease.

The other benefit of having the overall 20mm spacer is that the base just sits on the anti-dieseling throttle stop solenoid bracket so long as I align one of 2 bulges within the base plate with the above bracket.

If I was to use the K&N base with out anti-dieseling throttle stop solenoid, the base would press down of the accel pump assemblie which would not allow it to stroke fully.

As the 2 dyno places I have been to looked straight at this, it occured to me that it was a well known problem for Quadrajets and aftermarket air filter assemblies. They both noted the mod I had made.

Just thought others may had found a better solution or an off the shelf base that fixed it.

Cheers

I don't know of any off the shelf fixes. I used to run a drop-base on my quaddy with the Chev - with modifications to clear it. Sounds very common indeed!

I must just be lucky - I just measured the height of the pump linkage and its around 15mm as you say, and there's ample room for that in the base without modification (minimum 15mm, more like 17mm+ and that's without a gasket). There are no marks at all or signs of rubbing on the underside. The current base sits the bottom of the air cleaner level with the mounting face on top of the carb, but I've used several different brand (K&N being one a number of years ago) drop bases with similar clearance and no issues, however these were designed for 6" tall filters so wouldn't leave much of a gap for air intake with a 3" filter.

Thanks for the replys, I guess I will stick with the home made adapter for now whilst I look around a bit more.

hi baron,

not sure if you've solved this problem yet, but recently got a 308 with a quaddy, and my chrome filter for my holley wouldnt fit too, same problem of the clearance of the accelerator pump. Was able to find one at Supercheap, their Calibre range, the 14 x 2 inch did the trick. The base of it isnt flat like the others, it's curved up into the assembly so gives plenty of clearance.

cheers
