If you're running 800+hp then they're great, otherwise they're fairly useless. Too tall in 1st. If you want an auto (why??) then a t350 or t700 would be a much nicer choice, but that's just my opinion. A T700 will allow a nice low diff ratio and still allow for good all round driveability, including highway.

But having said that, if you really want a glide, get a glide : )

dont have to be to tall in 1st,we had a 1.98 1st in the glide
in the altered,only making 670hp out of a 358 sbc,good for a 1.08 60".

I have run P/glides for years in street/strip type cars.

Great on the dragstrip or for burnouts, light and fairly tough but.... on the street they do feel very slow in comparison to a 3 speed or manual car with eqivalent power.

To get the best out of them you need low diff gears and a real converter.

JMHO

Edit. A V8 glide has a 1.76:1 low gear, 1:1 top. You can fit a 6 cyl low gear with a ratio of 1.82:1 if your keen, this was all the rage years ago.

Street car with Powerglide

Its all in how a glide/car is set up, this street car above runs a 2spd glide, and is surley one of the nicest cars ive had the pleasure to drive on and off the street, and its so very responsive, if you just stand hard on the gas from idle (no brake pedal), this thing will immediately spin the tyres, and then try and rip your head off as the street slicks hook up.

Had a glide in the car forever, drove my brothers 550 horse Monaro and made the decision to put a 6 speed in. The glides as been said are good for the drag strip but around town are lazy, only 2 gears and 1st gear is almost like taking off in 2/3rd gear because of the ratio. You need very light weight and low gears, which I had both and there was no comparison between my car and my brothers for driving fun. I had more horse power and less weight and it still felt slower!

I guess to some extent it depends on wether you want it to feel fast or go fast. The glide is worth a few extra hp at the tyres as its a more efficient box. Go fast? go glide.

I totally agree!...I swear by them for being very very strong, lightweight and simple transmissions to use and maintain. My LC Torana with its Turbocharged 186 and 3.9:1 diff, works very well with its Glide and 3000rpm stall converter. They are alot more to me than a poor mans Lenko, this thing will shift real hard all day long.....Go Powerglide forsure!!

I'm going to back up support for the 'glide. For many years I have built and raced with them with great results in street cars. Manualising is a wise choice as it improves shift quality dramatically. Having done a few with trans brakes fitted as well these things can launch with a violence that is hard to imagine if you have the tyres to grip the track.
The 1.98 6 cylinder gear does help with 60' times but is not as strong as the 1.76 V8 gear as it only has 3 planetary gears compared to the V8's 4 planetary gears. A well put together glide will only take 12hp to drive the transmission. They can be built to shift so hard axles will break if the tyres do not spin! I will add that experience has shown a 1.76 first gear glide will need about 500rpm more convertor than a 3 speed to get a maximum launch in comparison to a 3 speed tranny. The glide is by far the most economical box to build $$$ wise and also in HP consumption. Durability is excellent partly due to the cooler running temperatures compared to many others. They are indeed a "poor man's Lenco"!
Personally I would not use a 700 for anything that wants to make more than 400hp.... the aluminium clutch drums inside them barely cope with the loads applied to them in Taxi's before flogging out. About 30 000km was the average taxi life of a 700 when they first came out..... we were replacing them for our taxi contractor every 3 months on average. Sure, the 700 can be 'built to take the abuse' but at a cost of about 5 times that of a good manual glide.
The glide does not 'feel' as fast as the 3 speed, however in my experience track results when properly set up show gains in mph with slight ET advantages over the T350/400.

ive had 3 Glides over the early 80's to early 90's and found them to be very tough and lots of fun, none of my cars had anywhere near 800hp that was a silly comment, the feeling of hitting 80mph or more and going into second with worked 6cyl reds and warm chevs(with less than 300hp is a fun experience, and none of them seemed slow ,maybe by todays standards they, are i dont know .
try building a tough 700series for less than $2000,(not possible) unlike the Glides which you will get very stout for $1500 or so,

I disagree, I have over 600 horses with 1350 lbs weight and 3.9 gears, 4500 stall convertor and it never really felt fast. Put in the manual an it woke up. It might be slower over the quarter but fun factor is about 5 times better! You need mega horse power and slicks to overcome only 2 gears. When I had the glide people would ask me to take them for a ride and all it did was smoke the bags, and you can't run slicks on the street. With the manual yes it wheel spins but its more tractable than a big convertor spinning up.

I'm fitting a gear vendors overdrive behind my glide.... I'll let you know how this goes, but the yanks swear by this combo for pro street type cars.

I think you'll find not only 6cyl Powerglides had the taller 1st. The Powerglides used behind 308 and later behind 253 in HT were the taller 1st gear too. Both of these were removable bellhousing so easy to spot.
