G/day fuzzypumper

There should be a slot in the bakelite housing that has a metal key in it, you have to remove this key to release the plunger assy.
Can't remember exactly where it is, may have to remove the diaphragm to find the slot.

Do you mean the slot in the first pic or the second?
Because I cant really see a key in the first slot , just the round shaft.

That looks like the correct slot in picture 1 but as you say there is no metal key in it. If that is the correct slot and the key is missing you should be able to withdraw the pushrod assy rearwards. Maybe its just the pushrod seal is sticking in the valve body bore. If the pushrod won't come out remove the diaphragm from the valve body and see if there is key slot in there.
It's been quite a while since I had a booster apart, memory is a bit hazy.

Note that the pushrod assy is not repairable, if worn it must be replaced with a new one. Though by now some clever person has probably come up with a way of replacing the rubber seal.

Looking carefully at the 1st pic of the slot it looks like the key is in there. The key is a flat piece of metal with a u shaped cut out to engage around the plunger shaft.

Hold the valve body assy in one hand with the slot facing down while pushing in the plunger assy, if the key is in there it should fall out and then the plunger assy will come out.
