My mum recently brought a new 2010 Camry, everytime she gets in it to drive in a forward gear it makes a noise , i have not heard this noise myself because she lives 400kms from here but she took it back to the dealer and the isolated the noise by removing fuses/relays, the noise she was told is "the abs re calibrating itself" . It happens once only after the ignition has been off for any length of time only in forward gear .i have worked on heaps of older model ABS cars and driven countless ABS cars and ive never struck this before. For piece of mind i told her to go for a drive in another one and she said it didn't seem to do it . Both her and my stepfather are worried it is some sort of fault. Does anyone have any idea what it is ?? do they all do this?? should she demand it gets fixed ?? its done around 500kms.

i might add that when the noise happens , the brake pedal pushes up against her foot.

Doesn't sound normal?

It may be recalibrating itself but I'd think it would only do that if the battery had been disconnected?

I did find this though-

Quote

When the vehicle speed first becomes approximately 4 mph (6 km/h) or more after the ignition switch is turned on (IG), each solenoid valve and motor of the brake actuator is sequentially activated to perform an electrical check. During the initial check, the operating sound of solenoid valve and motor can be heard from the engine compartment, but this is not a malfunction.

Thanks Peter , this noise is apparently audible from inside the car and pushes the brake pedal back aswell . When she took it back to the dealer he took her for a drive in another one to show her that its not just a problem with her one and although she heard something similar ,it was very quiet compared to her one . She also had the NRMA come and have a look and the guy said 'yeah it seems pretty noisy'. She is waiting for some head guy from Toyota to talk to her about it.

Is it only when she brakes or does it make a noise anyway?

If it's only when she is braking it sounds like a dicky wheel sensor setting it off?

Hmm. 'Noisey Toyota' Don't want that to get out... Someone might slap a chev badge on it!:tease:

Hi,
My son has a Toyota MR2 and it does the same thing just as it is first started up, he says it has to recalibrate itself too.
And he is a Holden trained mechanic so he must have some basis for saying this.

it always makes the noise she says its like a stick hitting the floor, always when the vehicle starts to move forwards , but its only when the vehicle goes downhill and she has her foot on the brake that she notices the kickback through the pedal. She can hear two noises she told me today , 'the stick ' noise and another noise that is much quieter .

If it makes it going down hill and pushes back the pedal, this is describing the ABS activating, I think she might find the wheels are slipping on the slope.

Thats one noise and as before the other noise whith the system resetting itself is common and Commodores do it too.

nah , the hill she is talking about is not steep and it at low speed without her actually pushing the pedal, but it does sound to me like the ABS is activating.
