G'day, been a member for a little while, first time post.
I purchased myself an SLR 5000 a short time ago and was wondering if anybody has access to build numbers.
This one is a factory auto(M40), would anybody know how few of these were made?
cheers
John

This came up a while back, from memory auto LH's were scarce but LX's were much more common.

There is no definitive build numbers on these yet. The records do exist but there is very little motivation to count them all (partly because there are many thousands, and partly as an SLR5000 is nothing special as compared to say L34 or Chev powered Monaros). I'm pretty sure L34 has been done though, as has all HQ-HX coupes and 350 powered HQ's bar Statesman.

Tried posting some pics but they were taken on a 15 megapixel camera, and are too big to upload..

LH SLR/5000 production 2,580 is the figure l have seen quoted. Although it seems that theres more than that left today!

Thanks, I have seen the total figures too, just looking for how few autos were produced, given the likes of the Canberra Torana club incorrectly states that the SLR 5000 was only available as a manual..

Update on Build numbers...
Have since been informed from a reliable source.
Quote
"The numbers I have are 1629 manual and 144 auto"
So given that there were approx 268 L-34's, although less desirable, the auto's are infact nearly twice as rare as an L-34????
Go figure

I'll ask but he does get hammered from everyone wanting specifics, which are a tad more difficult to count,.

Servise/Warranty records don't show colour or trim, just like the LC/J records everyone has.

So how would this guy have exact numbers of Manual and Auto vehicles? Would each and every LH SLR 5000 have been documented through service/warranty records only?

Counted them of the LH-UC service/warranty records, just like guys have done here with XU1's. The betsbac code is different for auto and manual and the model code is given so you can go through and count them. The only thing to be careful of though is the service/warranty records are not build records, but records of sold (or assigned in some cases if they are internal) vehicles. If a car was not sold at the time of printing it will not always be on the service/warranty records. I was lucky to have a few days of access to HZ records a while back, and I went through and looked at all the Sandmans I have recorded, and a few HZ examples close to the print date (like 2-4 months prior) were not there, as they obviously had not been sold at the time of printing. You also often find cars that have been used as internal cars, and the sale date on the records is like 12 months after the completion date - these cars have been used for press or drive cars, then given to a GMH employee to drive then allocated via dealer only tenders. The dealer that wins the tender is then is recorded as the selling dealer at that time in the future when they sell the car to the public. So if the records are printed in this period before the car is sold it may not be recorded either. I'm not sure when the LH-UC records were printed, but if it is close to the end of each series there may well be a few cars missing off any count.

Would be awesome if these records could be scanned and kept electronically. Shame to see these records get lost or locked away for no one to see.

You would think so aye? It's not as though there aren't enough people wanting to know. True the SLR may not be "special" compared to an A9X or L34 , but I tell you what my SLR is more special than an A9X to me. :)

Purchased the latest issue of Australian Classic Car today (December 2012, No. 232) and there is a buyers guide to buying an SL/R 5000. In the article it mentions that a total of 2580 LH SL/R 5000's were built up to Feb. 1976. The figures were from Terry Bebbingham, the author of "60 Years of Holden" but I don't know what paperwork he has to back this up. The article also says that 1250 SL/R 5000's had rolled of the assembly line by May 1974.
