Hi there,

As the title says, im just doing my research and was wondering people's opinions of which manual gearbox would be best behind a 355 stroker. Im after manual only and 5 speed and so far have only been told Supra 5 speed would be best but as i said, im just doing my research.

Thanks guys.

Mark

Tremec or Muncie with overdrive 4th (Muncie isn't a 5sp but 4th gear can be had as an overdrive). Either of these should last behind a 350ci Holden V8. A Supra may not!

I wouldn't recommend a Supra for a tough 355. Not unless it's only a cruiser.

For a performance 355, I'd go for the Tremec TKO 5 speed. This is what a mate in our car club runs behind his 355 in his LX hatchback... the car cops a lot of abuse (drag racing, regular skidpan/motorkhana events, and lots of spirited driving). The gearbox hasn't ever skipped a beat. Also gives him great economy out on the open road.

Thanks yel327 and LXCHEV for that.

What needs to be done to fit the Tremec TKO 5 speed besides bellhousing, tailshaft, etc?

This will be in a LX Sedan as well.

Put over 100ks on mine for the first time over the weekend, and could not be any happier with the Magnum 6 speed! Shift is as light as a feather and 6th gear with the 3.99's is 1800 @ 100kph. The best thing I have ever done to my car ever, the acceleration compared to the powerglide makes it fell like it has an extra couple hundred horse power. Go the 5 or 6 speed worth the hassle and that overdrive makes the car.

No conversion kit, bought the gearbox from Jegs in the states, bell housing is a Quicktime, got it and the hydrollic thrust bearing from mall wood. Clutch is a DFX Centerforce. The box cost me $3600 landed in Australia, Mall Wood wants $6000 plus for his setup, clutch was $500 landed ( rated at 750 horses). You just got to be care full with freight, if you don't do it right it will cost a bomb I had my box delivered by standby air freight for $450, took 2 weeks to my door.

You don't have to really deal with them, just make sure with your freight company you have it all organised. They pretty well did everything I used FedEX and did standby Air freight and it cost about $450 delivered to Australia. Paid about 350 duty (customs), they ring you for a credit card payment.

Does any modification need to be done to the transmission tunnel to fit the Tremec TKO or the Magnum 6 speed?

The TKO just needs a little cutting around the shifter, but the Magnum needs a floor section put in.
