I have started taking a couple of Landcruiser guards etc. back to bare metal. Due to time constraints, it may wind up being a couple of months by the time all the panels have been done. I am looking for a product that will give good bare metal protection while the panels are either in the garage or in the carport under plastic tarps. The other thing is that there would have to be minimal preporation afterwards to start painting. Cost of the material isn't a big consideration.

fish oil or some other oil should work
auto trans oil might be worth a try too
just clean it off real well with wax and grease remover before painting

gday

get some rust convertor from supercheap (either 3M or Septone) and follow the
directions and they will stay clean/surface rust free for months.
have used both types with great results.

71xu1 is on the money.

I was going to suggest any 1k etch primer.

I would definitely not recommend using an oil.

Cheers.

y not bomber?
you wouldn't "drench" it in oil
just a light covering to stop oxidation (rust)
like how you buy raw steel and i did say to "prepsol" like you should before painting anyway
i agree a primer would be better but chopper wanted a quick easy non prep way of protecting them from the elements
in all reality if left under cover the rust would be sfa anyway

Is this easy to get off later, or do you just rub it back a bit and slap undercoat and then top coat over it?

Bomber, I had my doubts about using fish oil. That tends to soak in too much, doesn't it?

rub it back and treat as a normal primer
i believe that's what it is?

A couple of years ago I was after a product that did the same thing so I sent an email to Troy Trepanier in the States. He is a custom car builder like Chip Foose and whenever I saw builds he had in progress either on TV or the net they were always in bare metal and clean. I got a reply from him and he said that they all use GIBBS. If it's good enough for Troy then it's good enough for me. I just need to find out if you can get it here in Aus.

Using any oil will create paint adhesion problems in the future.
