hi there

recently pulled the camshaft out of my hot 186 to find the camshaft saying CROW and 603 on the back. i looked this cam up on there site and it says its only a baby cam, like 443" lift or sumthin, but when i had this engine running it was pretty lumpy. is it possible that its a regrind??? im currently lookin for another cam for my torana xu1 when its finished and was looking at a camtech cam with 477" lift and around 291 duration. if this crow cam already in there is good enough i might just stick with it for a while to save some dough on new cam and lifters. does anybody else use this cam at the moment that can tell me what its like? or the rev range?

Cheers Blake :)

Hi Blake,
I have never used the 603 in a Red 6 but have used them in 308's before.
It is basically a performance hydraulic grind that I would imagine performing best between 2000 and 5000 rpm in a 186. Its no world beater or anything but for a daily driver it is a good size and would need a histall conv. or manual. Perfect for a weekender.

Hope this helps.

What's the significant duration like?

The cam ain't the only thing that can make a motor a pig down low lol

cheers struggler, and heath the duration is 214, i think this cam maybe too small for what i want or have anyways. my engine is basically xu1 spec with the triple 150 strombergs and big port head and so fourth. i was hoping for some real strong lump but something that has alot of 'go' aswell.

Cheers Blake

Okay, well yeah that timing isn't very aggressive... poor manifolding/carburation or even just bad ignition timing can give you some artificial 'lump' hehe

ye it is pre small hey heath. and i presumed that it was probly lumpy due to poor timing, i thought this before, easily done hahaha.
i just want a big cam with lots of lump and "GO" but i spose i should settle for a mild type of cam while im on my P plates, hahaha.

For an XU1 spec engine with head-work and triples, I think the Crow 603 is definitely way too small.

I used to run a Crow 604 in a fairly worked 202 (226 duration @ 0.050, 2500-5800rpm, .423" lift). It went really good (it's rated as a 'High Performance street cam'), but I ended up upgrading to a slightly bigger Dynotech cam. With triple SU's, the thing was a weapon!

That cam is possibly a little small for what you are talking about. I had the '665' in my 202 but I ran a single webber, would've been much happier with tripples or a 4 barrel I think...
Blake, if I were you I'd be going just a bit bigger than what you've got, as for 'lump' red 6s just ten to sound lumpy, even stock. haha. Whereabouts in Adelaide are you? Would love to cruise with some more young SA torana enthusiasts.
I think the thing that is going to give you the best 'go' is having those tripples tuned on a dyno and having your distributor recurved to suit. Having said that, cam is important and I am no expert, but in a mild daily my cam was a bit bigger than that and was comfortable as anything.

That sucks about not getting your Ps until Jan, because you're not allowed to have modified engines, v8s or turbos if you get it after October.. Good thing you like 'little' toranas. There is a place in Adelaide that do performance ignition, they used to sell through ebay, not sure if they still do.
I would suggest not to keep your points ignition, change to HEI (electronic) ignition, much better and easier to make power and allows the engine to rev a lot smoother.
I'll try to find that place for you, I think it was called something like 'Adelaide pro ignitions'
