G'day all,
Havent been on here for a while...ages actually but have a silly question to ask.

Got an LX hatchback that i've been buidling the last few years, and have got a problem where the alternator is not charging.
Now, it's got a 400 chev with an 130amp MSD alternator (one-wire). Does the light brown wire trigger the alternator to start charging the system?.

The alternator came with a 4 pin plug also, which lists the following :
Switched 12V
Warning light
something else
Tacho
From memory, I don't think the one wire alternators need 12v ignition..?????

Any help is much appreciated.

G/day Noshead

So they give you a 4 pin wiring plug but the alternator only has one wiring connector not four, is that correct???

AFAIK the brown wire is your warning light wire. It appears that with some brands of aftermarket alternators you have to feed a 12v switched (from ignition switch) power source to them to boot them to start charging. I have no idea why the wiring instructions recommends connecting your tachometer to the alternator.

Cheers
Dave.

as above.

For a one wire alternator it sure does have a lot of wires, LOL

msd alternators only require the battery cable to be connected they will self excite when the engine reaches particular revs. so if it isnt charging check the power supply to the battery stud of the alternator and your earth to the block. also try bringing the revs up a bit. those alternators are generally bullet proof unless the battery has been fitted the wrong way or incorrect jumpstarting.
