Ive looked up on a few sites and from what ive worked out the rear track on my lx hatch when stock is 54 inch's. i am just wondering is the rear track measured by? is it from the backing plate to backing plate on the diff or is it including the wheels? or something completly different? thanks

i think its the wheel mounting face to wheel mounting face ( a couple of inches added to the measurement from the backing plate to backing plate )
someone on here will know of by heart ( chopper , reda9x )

If you are talking about track width as against length??? Then you measure centre to centre on the tyres.

Im looking at buying a diff and the guy doesn't know how different the length is to stock. all he can tell me is that it is 52 inch's from backing plate to backing plate. can anyone tell me how long this is in comparison?

The width of a stock LH - UC bare diff housing ( no backing plates ) is 52".

The wheels you want to run will determine your axle housing lengths if you want a particular track.
Otherwise the overall width outside of tyre to outside of tyre with a particular tyre width will determine the track and the wheel offset and therefore your BUP will determine the axle housing length.
