AFAIK....out of the W**'s only the W58 came with a steel sandwich plate. So that would be a W58. (Not all W58's had this steel sandwich plate though)

All of the W57-58 series were the same strength, but the W58 has the best overdrive ratio - around 0.78 vs around 0.85 for the W57. W57s seem to be more commonly available than the W58s for gearbox conversions.

They're very smooth gearboxes, and quite strong, but don't try to put heaps of torque through the overdrive gear (this goes for the Bog Warmer 5 speeds too). From what I've experienced and heard, don't use overdrive until above around 80 kph, and don't leave it in overdrive and mash the throttle to overtake if you're running reasonable horsepower, and you'll be fine.

The W58 is as strong as an M21 I'm told although I've never tested them to breaking point. I've driven with both behind 253 toranas and gave them a good thrashing and neither broke. Although the W58 seemed to be more tollerant and I found to be the better box as the shifter didn't slip between the H-frame and of course has better gears including (lower 1st gear and the overdrive 5th gear).

I would not use the W58 or an M20/M21 behind a worked 308 with more than 300HP as its the sudden application of torque of the V8 that'll do damage (rather than the overall power). This is regardless of how much power a toyota supra can put out as it applies its power differently. (my opinion only)

I have done some extra searching and found out that some w55's also came out with the steel sandwich plate....The only sure way to tell which box you have is to check the gear ratio...

There has been many discussions over the strength of these gearboxes, the general consensus has been that the all alloy boxes have the same strength as each other (so all alloy W55, W57 and W58) and the steel sandwich gearboxes have the same strength as each other (W55, W58)...and the steel sandwich gearboxes may be slightly stronger then the all alloy ones....the later model W58's also have some slight differences in actual gear sizes etc

I have some extra info I found while digging around and will post it up later on when I get home...

There is a discussion going on at the celica supra forums about the strength of the W5* boxes, Clicky Clicky
