I think it was black.

But if you are lucky someone will tell you with certainty and probably even give you the paint code.

GMH Black - basically any shade of black you feel like mixing up.

What is the correct paint colour of the boot interior. Black or Grey

Hi

The boot and underbonnet colour of the LC and LJ Toranas is one of life's enduring imponderables. Anecdotal evidence suggests that whilst the 'default' colour was probably GMH Black, it appears that unused colours were dumped into the black at the end of each day resulting in numerous colour variations. These colours have variously been desribed as "mid black", "grey", "dark grey". "blue grey" etc etc. the best solution is to find an area of the boot or under-bonnet that has not been touched and match that. I went for semi gloss GMH low gloss black. Others may disagree, but I am not aware that anyone has a definitive answer.

Cheers

Bazza

My LC XU-1 8/70 Adelaide car has always been GMH black .
It has never been re - sprayed in the boot area.

Next Question , if the paint is just a mix of left overs ,why is there no grey/blue like mine , in XU1's and LJ's ? My Brisbane/Sydney GTR was an off black , maybe a mix of paints tinted black , but my blue/grey to me , looks like a choice not a hit and miss colour.

i have a friend that worked at ghm in the late 60,s and early 70,s,and i pritty sure he was a foreman but that doesn,t matter.

he told me when the first of the hk gts,s were made the black for the engine bay and boot was a pure black,as you can seen in the first media photo,s,then as they started the roll the paint was dumped in a large vat at the end of the day,and i think it was solid colours, black was added to mix each day and so it goes, and that is why i have never seen a hk,t,g with the same colour engine bay and i,ve seen many, and have quiet a few here to look at also.

he also would have seen the torana,s ,but i was talking to him about monaro,s at the time.

My Adelaide build XU1 had the original paint in the boot area under the parcel shelf and under the flaking black that someone had painted the boot area at some stage. Definetly black, blue, grey look. Underneath the compliance plate (ADR Tag) which had never been off in the engine bay was satin black. I think Holden must have done this till they phased out acrylics. I remember painting the boot floor in my brother in laws VN commodore that was also a black, blue, grey combo. To add some more validitiy in all of the paint shops I have worked in and Im talking acrylic lacquer days. Any left over paint in the gun would get dumped into an open twenty litre drum directly beneath the tap on the on the forty four of thinners then some thinners put back into the pot swished around and dumped back into the waste drum again. My point is it always ends up being a similar colour a real dirty colour hard to explain but I could see how black added would give the effect as found in the boot areas. Other car manufacturers do other things in these area to cost cut eg mettalic outer finish and solid colour in engine bay, metallic outer finish cleared and engine bay metallic but not cleared.

Just wanting to know if anyone has formulated or found a suitable colour code for the blue grey for the inside boot area for a 72 Adelaide XU-1?

If you are lucky enough to have some remnants of paint left in the boot area eye matching would be the best way as no clour code exists for it.

I do have original paint still in the boot I can match off but the car isn’t mobile at the moment to take to the paint shop. I was hoping someone might have gone to the trouble and formulated the colour themselves or gone through the many colour charts available and found something pretty close.

You can buy GMH-Black pre-mixed (very affordable) at most auto paint shops. Pretty sure it is less than $20 or $30 a can for a litre.
