No matter what paint system you use, an etch primer needs to be applied over bare steel. Treat the bare steel with deoxidine rust converter, then apply the etch primer. Any primer, acrylic or 2K won't adhere properly to large areas of bare steel. When restoring cars myself, i media blast or chemically strip the panels & before anything else, i apply an etch primer. Once repairs etc are completed, i etch any bare steel areas then prime the whole panel. Also while on the subject of primers, if your car needs a few repairs, i'd consider using a high build primer as primer is primarly a surfacer for the top coat paint to adhere to & is not designed to fill deep sanding or grinding scratches.

Oh ! Crap, ive just just used a small wire wheel to take back my rear windscreen frame to bare metal as is had loose paint ect, but i did not use an etch primer first, its just a Holts automotive primer, then i used a colour over the topPosted Image Do you think i should take it back to metal again and use an etch or do you think it should be ok?cheers Paul.

This is a hard one. I've seen paint delamination from incorrect/poor surface preparation, one of the worst cases i was able to scratch the paint/primer off the panel with my fingernail. Did you bare metal the whole aperture? To check adhesion, place a length of masking tape on the painted surface, leave it for a day, then remove the tape. If it takes the paint/primer off, i'd redo the aperture.

add prepsol/wax and grease removal into the above
(ie strip, deoxidise, meto or simalar, prepsol, etch prime prepsol sand prepsol again high build/normal primer prepsol sand presol paint prepsol sand blah blah )and go for gold
gees that's a lot of sanding and prepsoling lol
