Im looking at installing new big brakes all round on my lx slr and i was wondering if anyone has any input on what i should do or who i should use to do the conversion.
I have a ford 9 inch in the rear with torana drums which i am doing to get cut down to fit some wider tyres and just standard torana disks on the front.
I will be running 19inch simmons wheels when i get them made.
Just a few questions
1 What size roters should i use and how many spot calipers front and rear.
2 I know the brake booster and master cylinder are going to need an upgrade as well in the process so what should i use.
3 Am i going to have to upgrade all the brake lines to suit the new brakes.
Cheers James

Theres a lot of threads on this, from your basic HQ front commy rear like im running on my LJ, to skyline 4 pots on HQ callipers front commy/skyline rear, to ap 4 pots and big frOck off disks all round.
2) not neccessarily. Standard will work in most instances, though a lot of people seem to be putting the v8 commy 1" master cylinder onto a hybrid commy/torana booster. Not difficult.
3) Yes, your wasting your time if you dont get ADR compliant braided stainless lines all round, there not that expensive. Plus with different calipers comes different fittings on the end of the brake lines, so you will need custom brake lines made up with Origional torana on one end and whatever your going to on the other. Again not hard, most brake places can handle this.
Basically do a search mate, this has been covered in depth.
Cheers.

But as i know next to nothing in the brake department i was hoping that someone could point me in the right direction on what to purchase.
1 Price is anything i have to spend to get the job done right really but not going to spend a bomb on it though.
Yeah i though i would have to redo all the lines i like the braided hoses anyways.
cheers

My current setup is HQ - HX all round.
Do a search via Google using "GMH-Torana, disk brakes" and I am sure you will come up with pages and pages.
Rory has done a lot of research and development using various Japanese disk brakes and his items are well worth a read and very informative.
As stated above a lot depends on your budget and I am unsure if Hoppers Stoppers give the best bang for bucks...

who i should use to do the conversion.
I had Warringah Brake & Clutch install my Hopper's kit so they should have it fresh in their memory on how to do it.
Diff Technics in Kogarah may be able to help you with the 9 inch disc conversion.
I had Diff Trans Spares do my Borg Warner disc rear end conversion, the diff started making noises after a couple of years or so. They fixed it but not for long so I took it to Diff Technics and it's been fine since.
I have Commodore stud pattern all around and currently have 15" rims.

I had a complete Borg Warner diff and discs supplied and installed so best you ring them up for a quote for what you want.
The Hoppers kit installation only was $870 which included brake fluid, wheel alignment and a ball joint.

$5K should get you the discs I mentioned above and AP calipers front and rear that should clear most 17" rims.

I think it may have been there overnight not sure but they were ringing me as well as Pete from Hoppers for guidance.
They were a bit suss about the cable ties, they didn't think it was very professional and that there was very little clearance (1mm) on full lock when hoisted but Pete assured them he's never had a problem. I guess so far nobody's been airborne that high on full lock... and the clearance is still 1mm.
This was the breakdown:
Bleed & flush system $15.40
Ball joint $18.12
Workshop goods $30.00
Wheel alignment $64.30
Labour charge $742.50 - 7.5 hours
GST inclusive
There was also a suggestive retail column and the ball joint and workshop goods were $22.67 & $70.65 respectively. They charged me the trade discount I guess. I'm not sure what the workshop goods were, consumables of some sort, I should've asked but didn't notice till after I left the shop and didn't want to ring and sound nitpicky over $30.

I just spoke to a fella from hoppers and he said there front kit does not work with simmons wheels?
Has anyone tried to bolt on simmons to te hopper 300mm roter kit that they do?
Was that only for the smaller diameter kit and 15" Simmons rims?

Should be, the bolts in the three piece wheels get in the way, so you just have to go larger wheels than normal to get clearance.

The AP calipers etc would be great but I think they will blow your budget if you are planning on getting someone else to do all the work.

Also look at what your application is, will you be hitting the track/strip?
Personally I prefer stronger components as they take the occasional outburst/last longer but my car is road use only and I don't want to over engineer too much & throw away unnecessary $ for something that will never be used to potential.
Keep in mind with the larger diameter kit there is a minimum wheel size, you won't be able to fit 15" rims.

Im going a 19" rim anyways so i dont think that will matter to much.
I just got off the phone to race brakes sydney and got a quote for ap brake kits for front and rear
This was just a rough price
Front 330mm by 22mm with a 4 piston caliper is around $4000 with mounting brackets and braided lines
Rear 330mm by 28mm also with a 4 spot caliper was $3500
Rear 330mm by 28mm with a single spot was $1700 but that was a diff brand
Going to get a price for wilwood also as i hear they are good.

I bought a pair of DBA 019 discs ( 330mm ) for $400. CP5200 AP calipers are ( were ) about $1500 a pair. Braided brake lines can be had for under $150 each. That's a total of $2200.
$1800 is a VERY expensive pair of adapters.
Call somebody else.
