Im a after a 3 core radiator.. i just want to know what 3 core radiators come out of other holden models (for example HQ etc..) and do they fit without any modifications...

and also has anyone bought any radiators from Ebay that fit LC/LJ..as i have seen some where i have to modify the sides

what does it mean by modify.. do i have to weld brackets on or bend metal......?

They are out of HJ-HZ, normally 308 auto with A/C. They were optional in 6cyl (which is probably what you want) mainly in 6cyl Prems with A/C and taxis. They are cheap as chips new, but not great quality. I think you have to modify the sides where the shroud goes to clear the inner rails like you do with an LH-UC.

Why try to make stuff fit that wasn't designed to go in there when you can just give Norm at Aussie Desert Coolers a call and he will quote you for one that fits and works.

I was told the 3-core I have is HQ+ with Chev motor as 308 hoses were on wrong side, cost $80 and has been dam good. Yes I cut the edges off and re-drilled new holes.

+1, I use Aussie Desert Cooler brass 3 core triple flow ($420) in my LC, with worked red six, bolts straight in, car runs at good temp.

Very pleased with the product,

Regards Simon

A business was selling some on ebay a year ago or so out at Orange(Orange Ratiator Service)I think.I rang them and brought one for $385,they were a 3 core in a LC/LJ frame with standard tanks that fitted straight in.No drama for a hot 6 cylinder.
cheers Dane

Yep I had a 3 core intalled with my standard LJ tanks. HQ cores are an inch taller which do also fit with slight trimming.

Good plan, I ran a 3 core in my LC from a well known supplier, used to run at 190 f , went to the desert cooler and now I run at under 180 f,

I did go for the triple flow version, as I was concerned over the temps I was running.

Regards Simon

Hi, not too sure, I don't run them on the desert cooler radiator. I think from memory I had 2 x 14 inch, but don't quote me

Again, check out Woods Radiator service here in Orange. Steve is a great bloke and has some really good products. He is a Torana nut himself. Check out his stuff.

I got a triple flow radiator from Aussie Desert Coolers a few years back but I found the support panels on the side weren't very well positioned, leaving a huge gap between the radiator support panel and the radiator. I had a radiator shop melt the trim off (brazing) and reposition it about 1/2 inch back. Even with an engine fan (6 blade) and a 12inch thermo it still used to get too hot. Going up a long hill is one example as well as stop/start traffic. Even boiled it on a 4 day club run near Cooma with Sydney Torana Club when a group of us took the wrong turn, doing extended high speed running.

Don't get me wrong, I think Aussie's are good and he's easy to talk too - just be aware that it isn't necessarily the final word on getting hot

Correct, there are many other things that can contribute to (un)successful cooling.

Even with an engine fan (6 blade) and a 12inch thermo it still used to get too hot.

Mine just has a thermo fan and no mechanical fan and never gets hot so you obviously had other issues.

I also use Redline Water Wetter. Definitely makes a difference.

I've seen a water spray on turbo's but haven't seen any "kits" for sale. Where did you get the Redline Water Wetter? Is it an automatic thing or do you manually flick a switch when needed?

It's an additive for the coolant. I only run a 5% glycol mix with a bottle of water wetter. Do a google search and you'll find out all about it.

It's cost about $30 a bottle here but is a third of that from Jegs in the US. When I buy stuff from there I always order some spare bottles.

I think my radiator is standard, with standard mechanical fan. Never had overheating problems. I don't eat apples in the car & even if I did, I certainly wouldn't put the cores in the radiator.......

what would be the reason for the vehicle getting hot? like what MONZA1 said he just has a mechanical fan and no overheating problems

my engine has a mild cam, holley 350, extractors, coolant and gets hot when i stop at lights etc..

(one thing i havent really checked is Thermostat but both top & bottom radiator hoses are getting hot)

remove the thermostat and inspect, it may not be flowing enough to cool or flowing too much to cool the coolant. I had the same problem with my car, so i put in a new thermostat the original had one hole but the new one had none. So i drilled a hole in it and the car was a little better so i ended up drilling another 2 holes and no it doesnt get hot.
Also are you using the original gauge, this may be the problem as the one in my car was reading 180F but with a new temp gauge it was reading 170F.
Hop[e this helps
