Ask Swampy.

No I don't know Swampy, I found him in the seller's feedback page, from the ad he's sold 4 already so you can track down the buyers in his feedback page and ask them.

I have on of those (the green one). For the price it's not too bad. It does flex a little bit but you get used to rolling a certain way to counter the flex. Overall I'm happy with it. The chrome on the rollers isn't great quality but you just need to make sure there isn't dirt on the metal before you start rolling and it should last quite a while.

Ive always been amazed by english wheels and still have no idea how they work.... are they something that once you get one and start playing you will start to understand how it works and will slowly get better and better

Or is it something that you need to be taught how to use properly?

What sort of things do you use them to make things with anyway actually?

There's a bit of a knack to them but they can be figured out easily enough for basic things.

They're not really a lot of use on toranas unless you're filling a sunroof hole or making a new roof skin etc. They make compound curves mainly, so are much more useful on things like hot rods and 50's cars etc. If you wrap the wheel in rubber it will curve one way more than the other, but it's usually easier to use a roller to do things like that.

The way they work is to squish the metal in between the rollers, stretching it. The wheel will raise the metal as you pass it through, so if one area gets too high you need to raise the rest of the piece to suit.

Planishing hammers are also pretty useful things, and can do tighter compound curves.

I'll have to take a holiday one day and book in for the Dirtbag workshop tour to see all this stuff in action by a pro :)

I bought the planishing hammer from an ebay shop called ozmestore. I've bought a fair few things from them and they always do the right thing.

I was just about to comment on Peter too, Ryan organised a workshop tour for our car club down here last year, was AWESOME watching the man work magic with metal! Simply awesome! I'd recommend buying those DVDs

Another good DVD on the english wheel is by Ron Covell, he goes a bit more into it. You can get them from Graffiti publications.
