Hello all,

So I went and had a chat to a mates dad who has been a welder for 25 years and has recommended me this welder.

It's a Magnate 180p MIG. I haven't been able to find any reviews or even much info of Magmate the company it's self.
So what I was wondering is, has anyone incounted a magmate welder? Have found a few people of random forums
saying they are really good but would like a bit more.

Here is a link to the welder that was recommended. It will be mainly used for panel beating.

Thanks guys.

John.

Anything to do with BOC is now made in China crap these days (as of about 2 years ago) - if you are happy with stuff from there, it will probably lay down a weld but I wouldn't hold my breath on the quality.

The hand piece in the picture looks like a toy.

I checked out BOC's range mid last year when I was looking for my MIG and for a couple of hundred more got an Aussie made WIA in the size I was looking at with double the warranty.

If I was looking for a welder in that size, I would get the WIA Weldmatic 175. Better current range for thin sheet metal, 3 year warranty, bernard handpiece and although I havne't checked, I'll bet the duty cycle is better in the upper current range.

I agree with the r&d guy sorry dont know ya name
most off that gear is made in honky tonky land and you get what you paid for
i have cig 130 twin which was recommended to me by a welder where i use to work
15 years later still going strong and had no propblems with their gear
and yes done more cars than i can poke a stick at and has done alot of travand el to mates places too
what you pay for is what you get
One other thing start with gas and you will never go back
better welds smoothere and a far easyer than non gas wire
out of all my toys in the workshop the welder is still one of my favorite bits of gear
shop around
hope this helps buts its only my experience

Have heard people saying that BOC products have gone down the tubes in the past few years.

These are what I've been looking at including the one you recommended.

WIA Weldmatic 175
http://cgi.ebay.com....=item45f91337e2

Cigweld Transmig 175i
http://cgi.ebay.com....=item5adbb8b3d4

Magmate 180p
http://www.bocworldo.../aitfile_id/32/

They are all around the same price. The Cigweld seems like the most versatile but looking at the duty cycles of all the welders, seems like the Magmate 180p
is a very good unit, but can't believe everything you read right.

Another welder I've spoken to said that WIA are moving production overseas aswell so they will no longer be made here.

Yes unfortunately as of 1st Jan this year WIA parts are now made OS but talking to the Guy at WIA at Archerfield a few weeks ago, they are still being assembled in Adelaide.

I am glad I got in before that.

I do need to get some rollers and to do Alloy - hopefully they are still okay - or still old stock parts, I should get in soon.

I have a Lincoln 90 - my brother got it as a TAFE prize when they were still selling US built ones here. So that is 90 Amp based on 110V supply..........all they did was change the plugs over for our 240V supply.......
Better than most 140-150A welders on the market. It has done alot of work on different thickness bits for the hotrod, and has come through with flying colours.
I remember other members of the family saying it wouldn't be up to the job - more fool them.
The newer ones have better selectability of power, and as said, go gas straight up. You can always use gasless wire if you run out of gas, but if you want to upgrade a gasless machine you'll need to speed big bucks or trade it on a new one.
My old neighbour had one too, and even built a massive trailer to pull the burnout XD............that trailer is never coming apart!

So I vote you check out a new Lincoln. As mr5000 said, a little more bucks, but better quality than most.

Grant..
