I have a question that intrigues me, especially considering how particular so many owners can be about having everything exactly 'Right' on their cars..........

Why is it so many 2 door LC LJ owners insist on calling their vehicles a 'Coupe' when the plate clearly states them to be a "2 Door Sedan"? (well, my 10/73 2 door 'S' does anyway, along with every other one I have seen so far):blink2:

Most insurance companies will charge you a higher premium for a 'Coupe' as it's considered a 'sports car'. A sedan is usually in a lower premium classification. Mine is insured (much to the irritation of my insurance company) as a 2 door sedan as specified on the plate. They insisted it was a 'Coupe' until I provided proof it was indeed a 2 door sedan.

Anyone able to offer me some enlightenment why so many owners insist on mis-classification of their LC LJ 2 door's as a Coupe? :dontknow: I'm not rying to start a fight here... just genuinely intrigued. :surrenderwave:

Cheers.

Cant give you any answers but I was also puzzled when I looked at the ANDRA handbook and for some of the classes it said something along the lines of 'Sedans only' but when I looked at the photos and class records there were 2 door cars everywhere. I did a net search on the word sedan and found it could still be used for 2 door cars. I'm sure theres an explanation somewhere.

Im actually not that familular with LC-LJ's but are the C-pillars the same between the 2-doors and 4-doors? If there the same id call them a 2-door Sedan... If the C-pillar is unique to the 2-doors and has abit more slope id call them a Coupe

Just another example... In europe the Gemini equivalent is the Opel Kadett C and they have a 4-door Sedan, 2-Door Sedan (C pillar is the same) and a 2-door Coupe (Different C-pillar)

actually,i,ve never called my xu1 a coupe,just a 2 door torana.

maybe because it has a B pillar,but my monaro,s i,ve always called a coupe.

this is very interesting as i had never thought about it before.

The description of vehicle body styles has been around for around 100 years.

In the veteran and vintage era the following applied:

Tourer 4 doors with folding top. Today it is a convertable

Coupe 2 doors with hard top. Today the same applies. Some manufactures still refer to it as a sedan. Cortina did the same.
Basically these were cheeper versions of a sedan. But genetically they are a COUPE.

Sport Coupe with 2 sedan type doors with folding top. Today well I have not seen one.

Sedan 4 door with basically a hard top. Today a 4 door sedan.

Californian Hard Top with 4 sedan type doors but with a folding top. Again not seen one today.

Roadster 2 doors with folding top and dickie seat or boot Today a 2 door sports car with filding top; still called a Roadster.

There were other body style designations that are too detailed and have no equivalents today.

its to do with the silhouette of the two cars (2 and 4 door)
if the silhouette of a 2 door is the same as a 4 door i.e the roof line/shape of the car is the same, then its a 'sedan'. so in the case of the 2door lc/j toranas, they are the same as a 4 door. the only difference is that they have a different number of doors.
whereas if you look at hktg's the monaro is a coupe not a sedan as the silhouette of the car is different between the 2 and 4 doors.
the 2 door roofline swoops down differently.

Hi

A 2 door sedan shares the same silouette as the 4 door sedan. A couple has a different silouette. Therefore a 2 door Monaro is a coupe and the 2 door LC/LJ is a 2 door sedan..

Cheers

Its not determined by the amount of pillars

To be technically correct Coupe is actually derived from French and relates to the amount of space inside the vehicle - it has nothing to do with the number of doors, pillars or roofline.

However modern interpretations of the word are as basically stated above - a 2 door with a different silhouette to the corresponding 4 door.

But then is a 2 door car that doesn't have a 4 door version still a coupe ??

Agree with niterida, it is a #@$^%& up english interpritation of a french word.

Better still how do you define the sex of your car, most of mine have female, a teen, quite a few middle aged and the odd old boiler, but one car I just got seems to be male, is it true how do you tell?

Thanks for your input and the discussion so far guys. Like some of you, I have always thought ot the 2 door Monaro's as coupe's (because of the different roof line) and the LC/LJ Torana as a 2 door sedan. I have learned a bit more though so far... the pillar (or lack of it) I found interesting.
As for male or female all my vehicles (cars or bikes) seem to be sterile as I refer to them objectively as 'It' . My current Torana is often called 'The Turd'. Cheers. ^_^

Gemini Coupe's also have a B-pillar, but have a different roofline to the Sedans.

When does a car become a fastback? or is that just a mustang thing

Maybe also look to the Chevrolet descriptions, eg 1957 you could get 2 and 4 door sedans. The difference is the B pillar from memory. However they don't call the 2 door hartop a coupe.

2-door sedan
2-door hardtop
4-door sedan
4-door hardtop
2-door convertible
2-door Station wagon
4-door Station wagon

Like others above I always thought the HK-HX 2 doors were coupes as they had no B-pillar, and the LC-UC 2 doors were 2 door sedans due to the window frames and B-pillar. However I never really thought about the LX-UC having COUPE on the ADR plate, so maybe the roofline difference is on the mark.

Arent there a couple of different 2 doors in the 1000s as well?

I would consider the boxy, upright one a 2 door sedan.

Once again,I apologise for even knowing what a datsun is.
