how would side draft webers 45mm go like on a stock to mild 253/308 engine ?

Are they more show or go ?

I have always loved the different sound and look of a V8 with webers and was wondering

is it worth having them if properly tuned and setup.

i would consider Side draft webers as they seem to be more reasonably priced

what are the advantages as opposed to normal Rochester and Holley carbs

After a set for your birthday eh???

Happy birthday mate, hope all your torana wishes come true. :spoton:

FWIW any carby well tuned to a stocker will perform the same job as any other carby but the WOW factor is quite high with WEBER

yeh chokes would have to be pretty damn small for a mild 253 though.

if you intend on using webers,go down draft, they will work on stokers but you will find that you can put heaps of camshaft into the engine and the thing will still be able to be driven like a stoker but just go better, mate of mine did it to his vh brok which was already cammed big with single carb,he had to put more cam in it so he did and it still needs more, still able to idle it down to just tikin over over without it trying to jump out of engine bay,set up right you wont look bak.

Hi Tony here is photos of my old a9x with a 355 stroker and 48idf webers on it. To drive it didn't like cruising under 60kmh but 60 to 200kmh was fun!

G'day all,

Was after more info regarding the twin 45 side draft Weber setup on a 308.

Is anyone here running this setup?

Will they out perform lets say a 750 double pumper?

Has anyone managed to keep them under the bonnet? This is the only reason i wont use down drafts

Any help would be great. Cheers

to set up an 8 in the same way as a inline 6, you'd do it with 4 x DCOE on a cross ram type set up.  You'd need to be committed that way because it would run into fairly serious dollars.

As Ned says, its all about function.

Webers give their absolute best when you can match them one throat per cylinder.  Easy with an inline six, three carbs hanging off the side. Also easy with an 8, if you have the room.

Most of the worlds classic high end cars ran webers.

In the poor old Torrie, we struggle with bonnet room. Lots of L34's ran twin side draught similar to above post 10 ^, then in the A9X they were able to go to post 8 ^ because of the hood scoop.

I have run quads and were very impressed with them. I am currently setting up dual side draughts for my LX 308 sedan.

Good luck.

The only problem with webers is they need airflow to work properly. Driving around town is pretty ordinary, but once you get a couple of rpm on board, they rock.

cheers

It depends how you set them up... with a smaller main venturi (which are interchangeable in webers) they will be alot more responsive down low but at the expense of top end power.

The main thing would be finding someone locally who can set them up and tune them for you... if there is no one around I wouldn't even bother unless you want to do the research and buy a couple specialty tools and do it yourself.

basic difference between ida and idf is one does not have an ability to run a choke.

Afiak IDA'S are the older version, the Ida barrels are further apart and altho both have a 48mm throttle plate the ida's have a larger opening at the top (possibly better flow The idas only have 2 progressions holes compared to 3 on the idf so the idf's are a little bit smoother in the transition.

the common theme seems to be that IDA's are for race motors as they flow better in the top end but IDF's for the street

I had a pair of 45 DCOE's with 38mm chokes on a 1600 corolla years ago. I loved them, especially the sound they made at 8k rpm!!!

cheers
