G'day Guys,

I was hoping you could help with a couple of questions I have in regard to the trimatic in our rover crews' LJ Rally car.

Question 1 - Does anyone make an off the shelf shift kit? I would like something fairly basic, just sharper shifts and more response to shifter input?

Question 2 - Can somone recommend a cable operated Ratchet shifter (preferably fairly cheap) that we can use with our trimatic, it must have a neutral saftey switch.

Cheers and Thanks

Stewart

Not sure if the TH180, TH180C, 3L30 or 3L30-E kits will suit the trimatic. They are the same basic transmission. Found this question/answer on wholesale automatics website:

I require a shift improvement kit for a GM180 auto transmission fitted to a 1985 Rover 3.5 V8 SD1 saloon. I believe that the GM180(TH) transmission (made in Strasburg, used in many Opel cars) is very similar to the 3L30 in the USA and the Trimatic used in Holdens in Australia. Do you know just how similar the GM180 is to the Trimatic? How and where can I buy a Trimatic shift kit (stage 2? B&M? Trimatic not listed on US sites) to take a chance and try? Any help will be much appreciated. Best regards, Tim Gowing

The trans you mention is in fact a GM TH180 or Trimatic . Rover in their wisdom use a series 1 type that ceased production in the us and aust in the 1970's. Series 2 onwards have electric kickdown and a different gearset. All rovers I have driven are noisy and clunky and this is normal for that series. No shift kits are available to my knowledge, Here in Australia we do our own mods during a rebuild to obtain the required result quite successfully. Trimatics were fitted in holdens in Australia from the late 60's up until around 1986. Once they got them right in the last model they stopped using them and went to a 4spd.

Noticed they also sell adaption kits for VN V6 TH700R4 to Holden red/blue/black 6's as well.

Most of the B&M shifters have neutral start switchs a pro ratchet may suit your needs if constant shifting is required

Usually all thats needed is to drill the valve body to increase line pressure to firm the shifts up!!....Any decent Transmission specialist is able to kit a trans to shift harder.Interesting to note that the "full manual" side of things is actually a small spring....nothing more!!.....still trying to get these part numbers guys, put the kits somewhere "where I wouldnt forget where they were" and like always I cant find them anywhere!....might go check the other shed I reckon!
