I am going to change the stud pattern on my LX Torana very shortly. Just wanted to get some opinions on what to go to, as I have a 9 inch under the rear end. Is it better to go to Ford stud pattern or change it all over to HQ pattern. Whichever option is best where would be the best place to source my parts from to do this. The 9 inch currently runs 28 spline axles.
Any help with this would be much appreciated.

Perhaps a dumb question but why are you changing?

1 answer & possibly the best solution would be H-Poo / 5x120mm pattern as you are probably looking at the front brakes from same model = same PCD all round & besides who would wanna go fraud pattern on Torrie, Plus the need to carry 2 spares etc. etc. Where to get this done is fairly easy as any engineering shop can do it for around $100 per side...... Speed shop for the 1/2" wheel studs... Just my oppinion though...

Yep i think as Andrew said your front brakes will be a big factor.

But i must correct one comment HQ IS NOT 120mm PCD that is commy, HQ is 4.75" or 120.65mm.

Big enough difference to make your wheel fall off.

Most custom rear axles have multiple patterns drilled into them also, the Mosers i have have Torana (4.25) and HQ, I could have got ford pattern (4.5") if i wanted. I fitted HQ brakes to the front and have the same all round. Also have commy disks on the rear and the commy rotors slip over HQ pattern.

Or if you want to pull your front wheels in a bit you could convert it to P76 rotors and HQ calipers/stubs on the front, P76 is ford pattern so then your diff will be fine...

Really depends on what you have now, what you want, if you have your wheels or not, what kind of wheels you want, + a million other Q's that will surely come up.

Cheers.

Changing the stud pattern because I bought the car not long ago and it has front runners on and I don't like the style of the wheels either. As there are not many wheel options around for Torana stud pattern I thought I would change it.

If it was me I'd go HQ stud pattern (5x4.75") as that will give the most options in wheels of around 15" diameter and what I'd consider suitable offset for a Torana. 1/2" studs would be nice for a bit added peace of mind, and build the diff so that the usual HQ/Chev wheel offsets will fill the guards nicely without rubbing.

Yeah your right bomber HQ & commodore is a big enough difference to make wheel fall off reminds me of a HZ wagon i had that brought that had commodore pattern hotwires on it unknown by me until i loaded it one day with a heap of gravel drove 3 KM down the road as i turned right into my street heard a terrible knocking noise in the rear stopped got out to find 1 wheel nut this was after putting 5 new ones in it 2 days before when i drove 65 km with three across the back seat got out and notticed two snapped studs,as for what to do id say decide what you want as far as brakes/wheels and get axle to suit

Then go HQ, its easily the cheapest way to change the front and get a bonus brake upgrade. If you are canny good useable bits will cost you less than $50 all up then its just a bit of your own time to fit.
Some places will redrill your axles but its not legal for street use in victoria. New axles may be required with cost depending on how big a brand name you want.
