Gday.......
just a quick one, is a 173 block the same as a 202?i've been that the
only difference is the crank stroke. if this is true, could u use a 202 crank in a 173
to bring it out to 202ci with the right pistons?
would this work?
cheers peter

Hi runna 202.
No, the 173 has a smaller bore than a 202. It's the 186 that has the same bore as a 202. You cannot bore a 173 to a 186 bore size.
The 173s can have either of 2 types of crank in them, the early ones have the same small journal size as 179/186 etc. The later 173s have the same large journal size as a 202. So theoretically you can stroke a 173 using a 202 crank. Problem then would be the pistons, but it was a good idea though.

I read somewhere that 173s had the thick block walls similar to a 179 so they could be bored out a bit bigger, how true that is I dont know

Why would you bother? 179,186 and 202 blocks are cheap enough anyway.

Hi Guys.
CHOPPER is correct, why would you bother.
The only possible exception would be if you had a nice stock original car with a 173 & you wanted to keep the same engine block & numbers for originality.
A good 173 block could be bored to 179 std bore size, but no more & then you could use some stock bore pistons. But as I said, if you stroke it then what do you do for pistons.

Im not saying that you would want to do it, just that you could.
I have no need to, there is a 202, 186 and a 179HP (186 bore) sitting in my shed at home that cost under $200 total including a YT head and 2 opel 4 speeds (1 reco)

Couldn't you use the 173 pistons with the 202 crank & rods? Wouldn't it give a full 202 cubes?

No. A stock bore 173 with a 202 crank will give you around 187 CID. Problem is you then need a custom piston, as the stock one will hit the head due to the longer stroke.
