Hey guys, has anyone come across an XU-1 with a boot popper. The reason I ask is the LJ i'm restoring at the moment has a small barrel looking thing with a wire coming out of it situated directly on top of where the boot latch is I'm only assuming it is a boot popper dunno what else it could be.

Cheers.

Might it be for an alarm? Maybe a switch to trigger alarm if boot is opened?

Nah it looks factory like it has been on the car since day dot. It was under the bobtail which has never been removed as far as I know.

I believe the poppers started in late HZ so of course around the 79... i dowbt an LJ would have had 1 factory but again a picture would help tell... For instance if it was original there should be a section of the boot different to a standard boot for it to attach onto

You can't fit a boot release to a standard LC/J as you would need to replace the lock mechanism. I looked into this on the LJ.

I am sure I saw one on an original HJ statesman. The difference is the lock is fixed in the LC/J (as in the lock rod cannot be turned except by a key in the lock) whereas on the Statesman the lock rod could be turned when there was no key in it. I was going to try and find a Statesman lock to fit in my LJ to do a boot release, but alas it was one of the tasks that never got completed. I still have the motor and wire kit I brought from Jaycar somewhere.

LOL, That's a new use for a starter motor solenoid. Home made electric boot release.

^ lol!

I actually really like the fact that it sits under the spoiler, although it's cooler to have no lock barrel at all :P

So there's no way this factory fitted. I only ask because dad was the second owner and it wasn't that old when he got it and I know he didn't put it on.

No mate, 150% not factory fitted.
Who would be dumb enough to mount it under the spoiler then have a hole in the boot lid for water to leak in through?

"'Looks like the solenoid from a grey motor starter motor".
Exactly what I thought ls2LXhatch but I haven't seen a a grey motor starter for a while to say for sure.

Cheers
Dave.
