question....just putting my front end together and the upper control arm bump stops are very hard against the crossmember.at the moment the crossmember is out of the car and with no motor i guess my question is when the motor is back in and crossmember reinstalled how much gap is there between the upper bump stop and the crossmember?

If I'm reading your question right,it is normal for the upper bump stops the touch.

Once it is on the ground with the weight of the car and engine on the wheels there will be close to 2". It's recommnded to not fully tighten any of the suspension bush fasteners until it is on the ground with the parts in their 'neutral' position. This saves them from excessive twisting in the rubber that can shorten their life expectancy. Nolathane or similar do not suffer this problem but rubber ones will.

Rubber or Urethane (Nolathane), it doesn't matter. Don't tension the bush bolts up until the car is on level ground and at full kerb weight.
