Hi,

I was just after some ppls opinions as too whether I've got a problem or not (hey, be nice).

The brakes in my LH don't seem to be that great and need a fair bit of force for not much result. The other night I was doing a 3 point turn and had to really stand on the things to stop the car, it felt exactly like trying to stop a car when the engine is switched off.

So my question is about vacum. How can I tell if the booster is not working properly, what sort of things break in the booster? What else may it be?

The discs and pads are fine, brakes have been bled and fluid changed about 4 months ago.

It has HQ discs and ford drums which is a fairly common sort of upgrade for streeters and I thought would be reasonable, I'm now leaning towards the fact that something is wrong with the system rather than I was just expecting too much.

Cheers,

Must be the ford drums letting you down !

Sounds like the booster. Dis-connect the hose ( and plug it ) from the manifold and see if there is any difference. If there isn't, there is a fault with the booster. If the fault is other than the check valve or vacuum hose, get it fixed by brake professionals. The spring inside the booster can push your nose out through the other side of your head. Well not quite, but it can hurt.

O.k, thanks, something practical I can try. Little bit of a scary thought tho, going for a go round the block with no brakes. I doubt the thing has stopped working all together but there is certainly something wrong.

Are there places around that repair the booster, or do I just go out and buy a PBR one or something.

Cheers,

Just try it in the driveway. You will still have brakes, just a bit harder to use.

Turn the motor off, pump the brakes till the pedal goes hard, leave foot on and start engine, pedal should "sink" a little. If it doesnt you have a problem. Check the one way valve into the booster, make sure there are no vacuum leaks and eliminate all the peripheral stuff before you get into pulling the booster apart.
