Another gearbox question..

I currently have a 253 and auto in my 1977 LX sedan, but I am in the process of getting a 355 stroker built. While this conversion is taking place, I also want to go from auto to manual. I also plan on running a cable clutch. The vehicle will only used as a weekend cruiser, with very little drag/race meets - as in I will be entering powercruise once a year, and doing the odd burnout whilst there, that will pretty much be it. Apart from that I will give it the odd few berries here and there
Now I have been researching this forum throughout the morning and it seems as though a T5 would suit my needs. If needed I will upgrade to something tonka tough later on down the track but if the T5 lasts me untill then I will be happy
I understand that T5's came out in ford 6cyl, 8cyl and holden 8cyl. Apparantly the ford and holden 8cyl T5's require alot more work for fitting, where-as the pre AU 6cyl box is a fairly straight forward fit. I just gave CRS a call and got a price on a bellhousing and X member to suit.. around $760.
So, can anyone offer some more advise please? Do the 8cyl boxes require much more work for fitting - and will it give me much extra strength??
Thanks heaps
Liam

Regardless of which model or make they come from, the basic box is the same.
Different manufactures change parts to suit their specific need, like bell housungs, input shafts, gear sets, rear extensions ect, but the basic box is the same.
The advantage of using a commorore T5 is that you don't need to hunt down a bell housing, change an input shaft, or try to find a clutch which is going to work. Holden have already done this.
The reason the Fraud T5 is a neater fit, is because of the rear extension housing. It's slightly narrower than the holden box, & slightly less tall.
Easiest solution is to use a commodore box, then fit the fraud rear extension to it. This also aligns the selector to the existing tunnel hole a lot better.

Statler: Thanks for the detailed feedback also, so if i go a ford T5, I can get a new bell housing from CRS.. will I also have to change the input shaft? If yes, are these available aftermarket somwhere? Likewise with the clutch.. if I changed the input shaft to suit the holden motor, all I would need to do then is get a clutch kit to suit the holden yeah?? The ford T5 seems alot easier.. sort of anyway!!

Grab the single rail conversion.Another question please.. I have been offered a single-rail conversion kit fairly cheap.. do the single-rail's need any modding of the tunnel to fit?? And does the shifter sit away from the original spot much?? Thanks
I had a single rail and then changed to the Ford T5, I used the single rail bellhousing and every thing else that bolted up to the single rail
EVERY Thing that makes a single rail conversion to a holden is the same as a T5, except for the bellhousing that can be used.
To use the single rail bellhousing you need to machine the front bearing retainer on the T5 down to single rail size, about 2mm off the out side edge.
Then drill and tap 4 new bolt holes in the bellhousing for the T5.
Single rail and Ford 6cyl T5 have the same input shaft length and spline, they have the same shift position, the same over all length and same out put shaft splines also same rear mount position but wider bolt hole spacing
I reused my single rail clutch, spigot bearing, throw out bearing, tail shaft ,Xmember,

My 6cyl ford T5 was in the same position and I had to extend the shift hole about 30mm rear wards to clear the shifter housing, my M21 shift boot stil covered the hole

i think you will be right strenght wise but to fit up the Holden V8 T5 its goes like this. ill never do it again thats for sure. i will either go the TH700 or TH350
pretty full on job, i do hear the the ford T5 does fit straight up but i dont which one ?
I suspect why you needed to do so much tunnel work is that you used the original torana Xmember as in the pic through the hole where your trans tunnel was.
The torana Xmember steps upwards, the CRS xmember steps down lowering the box.
I fitted mime with the CRS xmember and only had to clearence the shifter housing
