Hey Guys,

I am just starting to think about the mufflers I am going to run in my new exhaust system for the 355... I'd like to get some suggestions as what to look at... I will probably buy them off Summit or something from the States, as its just so cheap at the moment! (Unless there is a good product locally of course)

I am going to be running a twin 2.5" System (Nothing set in stone, just think that's the best for me). I'll have a full system made up, but probably run it dumped at the diff most of the time... haha.

What are the good brands out there? Flowmaster? Magnaflow?

Also, I have seen recently those Varex Mufflers, with the remote 'volume control' haha. What are these like? Im guessing they'd be very pricey! But how would they go on a Torry?

Anyway, recommend away! Interested to hear peoples thoughts on them all!

Probably depend on how loud and what sound you want out of the car.

We use heaps of 2 chamber flowmasters on Camaro's and such, and I like how they sound...bit loud and that classic ticky sorta flowmaster sound.

Have used some Magnaflows on a few different things from time to time...abit quieter and not the same sort of sound as a chambered muffler like the Flowmaster as well....not bad, just different.

I was thinking of going with 2 chamber Flowmasters for my Torana....but wanted to run the side exhaust exhaust, and not really alot of room under there to have a 'normal' type inlet/outlet muffler and get the outlet in front of the rear wheel.
I had heard Spintech's on a few different cars out here (including on a mate's stroker small block '66 mustang) and liked them...abit loud in thier normal inlet/outlet style, but tough. They also make a muffler with inlet on the end like normal, and the outlet is on the side which is what I went with. Very happy with them as well...they have a sound all thier own and not overly loud either.

If you like the chambered sound of a Flowmaster but not as loud/resonating you could always go with a 3 chamber one as well.

Chris, I wish you and Ray were down here! The Hatch would be there in a heartbeat to get it's exhaust! haha

I'll have to check out the Magnaflows... Anyone have Magnaflows on their 355s and got a video clip or something of how it sounds?

I have a single 2.5 mandrel system on my hatch with one hooker aerochamber muffler near the diff. I love how they make it sound more like a race car than your standard mufflers, cheap too!

some time ago I purchased 2.5 Genie Tornado 'straight through' muffler and 'straight through' resonator based on this:

I thought it was a good compromise between flow and db. Sounded good when 'on it'.

Hooker Aero Chambers!! Nothing beats them for sound quality, flow capability and life span. No packing to break up and they never change note. I have used Flowmaster, Edelbrock, Magnaflow, Supertrapp, Dynamax, and a few of the other cheapies along the way but the Hookers are still the best IMO.

I'm running Magnaflows on my 355 with twin 2 1/2 and X-pipe, not overly loud but sound great.

I havent uploaded any video/audio of it myself yet but Welby (A9X) uploaded a very brief vid of it turning around, here is the link Big Al's. That is with the hotdog's on the back as well which was to try and make it a little quieter for the pits. The hotdogs just took a little bit of the edge off but you still sort of get the idea, sorry no WOT audio......yet! Another plus I find with the Magnaflows is they are nice and compact.

Hope this helps.

Dave

Sorry, just to add to the above. When I drive it, I have no interior (racecar first, streetcar second) and I keep expecting grannies and other locals to be storming out of their houses with pitchforks wondering what all the noise is. In reality though, it seems people hardly notice it coming until it's right on them. This is normal suburban cruising of course, when I pop the secondaries I think people would start running for cover. That said though, on the racetrack my mates spectating say it's not that loud out there. Personally I think it's just right for the street.

Thanks for all the replies guys!

I hadn't even thought of the Hooker Mufflers. I might do some research on them!

355LX, I like the note of yours in that vid... Doesnt sound loud, but sounds like when you hit the go pedal it would scream... Hard to describe the sound... haha

In Regards to Inlet and outlet locations... Do Torries need anything special?

Another vote for the Hooker Aerochambers, I have used heaps of them and love the sound, even got one on my VH C/dore ! My UC was faster with the muffler on than it was with open pipes, yeah, I'm a big fan !

You can get them locally cheaper than you could import them, if your keen let me know.
