Rust

Check everywhere
Look at juniors "WB" thread for the main areas

Take a magnet and go over it top to bottom
Mechanically easy... just a big Torana :)

cowl under the windscreen, stick your hand up under the dash and feel the plenum for rust holes or repairs, base of the rear screen and the floor of the tray, open the doors up and look at the bottom corners of the windscreen where the cowl finishes on the ends as well along with sills and bottom of the front 1/4 and behind the doors.

All the above, plus rearward lower sectioms of the front giards, bottom of doors (lay down and look up at them all) while you're there look at the sills, they are a very common spot for rust.

dont let a bit of plenum rust (internal, top skin is a bigger pain) put you off, I jist tackled some in our ute (threads updated) but if your one has crappy paint and a rusty plenum, you could always take the plenum off anyway :)

Good hunting bloke!

Dont forget to check the floors as well, if the floors are rusty then you can almost guarantee the plenum is rusted out too.

Easy way is to travel inland and buy a country car. No rust to repair, just mechanicals, paint and chassis cracks!

They can crack around the idler arm on the subframe - check for welding in this area.
Also if the front lower section of the guards are rusted , there may be rust behind here in the body shell which you won't find until you pull the guard off.

thanks for all the help on where to look guys it was great.
i printed this off and took it with me.
we chucked it up on a hoist and had a good look at everything and its pretty solid.
there was some rust in the bottom of the guards behind the rear wheels, small amount in the passenger door and a little bit in the left cowl panel at the base of the screen, but a heap better than most ive seen.
all of it is repairable and hasn't eaten into anything major, just panels.

so...i pick it up in the next few days and when i get a chance will begin the fun and games of getting the rust out.

just gotta find a nice set of rims to replace the jellybeans, and get rid of the 4 post bullbar!!!!

no pics just yet but ill throw some up when i pick it up.

thanks again
cheers

It's really only the chassis that you need in good nick....... The rest of it gets sent to scrap so you can build "THE MOST SUPEREST AWESOMEST BUGGY IN THE HISTORY OF THE WORLD!!!!!

Hmm. Something with spinning blades on the nose would look pretty cool, I reckon :)
