Ok, well its a Banjo LSD. It was making a hell of a lot of noise so i replaced it (for a non LSD temporarily till i found an LSD). Excuse my incorrect terminology as i know sfa about diffs...

I opened it up, and removed the centre to see what was wrong, the only thing which appeared damaged was the pinion gear. The bigger gear (crown wheel?) appears undamaged, and unworn.

Now heres where it gets tricky to explain... Ill try to explain what damaged the pinion.
There is a centre ring which has a shaft going through it (maybe 16mm dia?) which is held in by internal circlips, well one circlip is missing and the shaft was allowed to move further into the diff, and clipping the pinion as it spins, sending fragments of gear all through the diff. So also the shaft has some damage on one end, and where the circlip sits also looks slightly damaged.

Can i fix the centre by just replacing the pinion only, and with the 16mm (or so) shaft put it back in place and just tack weld it in place so it wont move (i dont think a circlip will fit in now). if i ever need to remove the shaft again i can just die grind the tack off. That shaft doesnt spin or need to move does it?

Thanks
Mike

Hi Mike

I don't know much about diffs either (someone will correct me) but I understand that the crownwheel and pinion are produced as a matching set and must remain so. If one is stuffed both must be replaced.

no the shaft does not turn the internal spider gears turn on it. tack welding while looking like a great solution is not the best solution. when welding you produce heat and thus can weaken the diff. having stated that a tack weld would not do too much, but you will be welding a centre and really it would be better to take it to a diff place an get them to look at it. they may have some "tricks" which will help. IE I cannot remember whether the sals has teh same gear for this part ??? Anyway have a look at it. you might find that the damage is a little more than what you are seeing pressently.

Cheers

Also, the splines on the end of the axels are 10 spline, meaning course?

I think that might be a no if I recall correctly your lsd is a 3.55? and therfore the crown and pinion will not bolt on your hemisphere.

2.78:1 diff has 14 teeth on the pinion and 39 on the crownwheel.
3.08 has 13 and 40
3.36 has 11 and 37
3.55 has 11 and 39
3.90 has 10 and 39

cant remember the number of splines on fine spline but i think they were in 4cly cars so if you put in a center and axles to get it going again swap the yoke aswell.
my advice is start a plan now to put a better diff in it as i learnt after a collection of about 10 banjos under my house, trust me unless yuo are planing to win some award or resell a l34, dont spend another cent on the banjo.

Hi Guys.

10 spline axles are referred to as 'coarse'.

Banjo 'fine spline' & small Salisbury have 23 spline axles & the large Salisbury axles have 28 splines.
