the best place for a T5 is in the shed, someone else shed. Sad and cheap boxes.

t5 are alright as long as your not making 2 much power, i would say not much more than 200km at the motor. t56 are the six speeds, very strong, very expensive and a very hard conversion.

So would a T56 be worth it, and arnt Muncies and Muncie Rock crushers ment to be extremely good box's, ive been told that a Muncie Rock crusher can handle 700hp

They jump out of gear with a bang. They are noisey. They use tranny oil, not gearbox oil. NOT built to handle a V8 at all. The T5 in my 185i ss was stuff when i sold it at 90,000km and was noisey at 40,000 and never flogged (good when new). I can say the T5 is the worst gearbox i have own and VL turbo box not far bebind it. And I have never blown a manual gearbox in my life.

t56 boxes are pretty expensive, around 3000-3500. but the main problem is there is no way you will fit in the torana. you will have to cut out your trans tunnel and get a custom one made. not really worth it.

Actually, L_X_ Hatch, the T56 gearbox fits very nicely into the Torana with very minor mods. No need to get a custom tunnel made.

Here's a few pics of a T56 into a Torana. It is only a trail fitment with an empty T56 case. While it is a big box its saving grace is that it's not that wide. It's long and deep as opposed to an automatic which tend to be wider than manual gearboxes. It's a nice fit and only very minor mods will be needed for the conversion.

The transmission tunnel has not been cut in any way to fit the T56 & the same gear shift location of the M21 has been retained. Only a few very minor taps with a hammer were needed on the rear left side of the tunnel to allow clearence for the reverse solenoid lockout.

The rear casing was changed with that of a early Camaro to allow the use of a mechanical speedo cable and the reverse solenoid lockout has been connected via the brake switch.

So hopefully this will put an end to the rumours that a T56 won't fit into a LX Torana without major modifications to the tunnel. I was told the same by various people but I just chose not to believe them! :D

That is some werid angle you've got with that T56, you need to get the trans parrallel with the rails. Or is it just the angle of the pics?

Hi Mick,

Here are a few dimensions of the two gearboxes.

Posted Image

GM Super T10, Muncie, Saginaw A=6.3 B=14.2 C=23.0 D=N/A E=N/A F=3.75
GM T5 (V8) A=6.3 B=16.0 C=25.0 D=19.0 E=21.2 F=3.75
GM T56 F-car (production) A=4.9 B=21.0 C=26.4 D=21.1 E=23.9 F=3.75
GM T56 F-car (aftermarket) A=6.3 B=21.5 C=27.0 D=21.6 E=21.6 F=3.75

Measurements are in inches.

The T56 extension housing I have to allow the use of a speedo cable will not fit the T5 but I'm sure there would be a similar T5 housing that you should able to swap over to suit your needs. A good friend of mine had a T5 installed in his VH Commodore which had a cable driven speedo.
