yep sure is mate! 
i just got one yesterday out of a 84-85 vk and it has
the same VL ******** engine number

The VL denotes that it came from a commodore, so it has the ability of it being a black motor, or a late red or even a blue. check the cast markings around the starter motor position and tell us what they are. this will give us a little bit more of a clue.
