hi all,

i have a rebuilt 202 xu1 head street terra roller rockers my problem is when i loosen the rockers off
to adjust them they dont rattle at all.i have standard hydraulic lifters would it be easier for me to install
anti bleed lifters and adjust them that way. Would the clearance then be zero lash?

Doesn't matter whether you have standard hydraulic lifters or anti pump up lifters the lash will always be zero.
If the lash is less than zero they will be noisy and if it were more than zero the valves would be held off their seats.
The idea of hydraulic lifters is to maintain ZERO lash.

Where anti pump up lifters differ from standard lifters is at high RPM the standard lifters could pump up and hold the valves open slightly.
Anti pump up lifters wont.

If you are having trouble adjusting the rockers I would suggest doing an initial adjustment by turning the engine over by hand.
Remove the spark plugs and the dizzy cap and when the rotor button is pointing at No1 lead position and pistons 1 & 6 are at TDC adjust both rockers on No 1.

Loosen the rockers right off till they are really loose, then while turning the pushrod with your fingers adjust the rocker up until you reach the point when you feel resistance to turning the pushrod.
This should be close to ZERO lash. Then adjust the rocker nut up a further 1 to 1.5 turns and lock it off.

Follow the firing order through until you have done all 6 pairs of rockers. Check with a torch through the spark plug holes to ensure the piston on the cylinder you're adjustIng is at TDC. This will ensure the lifters are on the base circle of the cam.

Once you have done this you can then go through the rockers again with the engine running, knowing that if you wind the rocker adjusting nuts back 1 to 1.5 turns you should find the point of zero lash where the rocker starts to clatter.

Remember when adjusting rockers with the engine running the engine must be at normal operating temp, make your adjustments slowly in 1/4 turn increments and allow the engine idle to settle before doing the next 1/4 turn.

If you don't have thermo fans on the engine set up a pedestal fan to blow air into the radiator.
