Why are my 26x12 R15's actually 25x11's?

Was looking for some tyres for the Torana, currently have 295/50 R15's which are a pretty good fit but could be wider, but also could be less taller..

Ahuh found some Mickey Thompson sportsman S/R's 26"x12"x15"

Put it though a online converter and came out as equivalent to 305/46 R15 which was perfect for me, a touch wider but not quite as tall.

Ordered a pair through VPW and they arrived today and I straight away thought hmm they look small, checked and they say 26x12x15 on the sides...

Get home and pull the tape out and they are 25" overall diameter and only 11" wide (that's max width including the bulge of the sidewall, actual tread is even less)

Now am I missing something here? Am I wrong to expect that a 26"x12"x15" tyre should actually physically measure to be 26x12x15???

I dislike imperial enough already are the yanks really that backwards?

I took pics with my ruler on the tyres, I'll post em up once I got the laptop.

Just checked the Mickey T website and it states

Sidewall width = 12"
Tread width = 10.6"
Overall diameter = 26"

I expect the measurements on the MT website are taken with the tyre mounted on the specified width test rim and inflated to a specific pressure.

It will be interesting to see how much they grow when fitted.

Yep the wheel that they are fitted to makes quite a difference in some instances. Also it seems to be a common trick that "street" class tyre width is measured sidewall to sidewall whereas full slicks are measured in tread width

So you think once inflated they will stretch 1" wider and 1" taller?

According to the web site it should go on a rim between 8.0" and 10.0" wide, and they measured it on a 10.0", so I would say yes that's quite likely

See what happens when you don't research something foreign (imperial tyre sizes) enough and buy interstate and unable to see the product before you buy.

Suppose it's my fault, bit of a bummer as 305/45 R15 would have been perfect and I love the tread pattern on the sportsmans... Hmm maybe I just settle for a smaller tyre. But I don't wanna buy rims to suit this width then want to get wider Tyres later.. Hmm

Only one way to find out :).

I would be putting my money on the tyre growing when fitted and inflated, the measurements should be within 0.25"

What width rims do you have?

10's

I emailed VPW he said they list the diameter as the maximum possible diameter you would get with full pressure and doing a burnout etc...

Being a radial and adding the fact that you will probably run a reasonable amount of pressure on the street I'd say there won't be a lot of growth from burnouts/speed, once inflated it should be pretty close to the advertised size.

Even your average 265/50 street tyre looks a lot bigger and better mounted on a 10" wheel than sitting by itself

Yea I think I might stick with them, there isn't much other choice really... I love the 295/50's but the overall diameter is just a touch too big...

These MT seem to work out at 270/50 15

I'll have another play when I'm home next, see if I can get the 295's to fit with mods otherwise I'll keep the MT's

Nah a 275 probably wouldn't have the true tread width that does, they'll be fine. Less diameter is good too

I'm running the exact same tyre on 10" rims. Just gave it a measure and I get close enough to 25 3/4" OD.

Cheers,
YT

rim width makes a huge difference, my 275/50/15 et streets measure 283mm wall to wall on an 8" rim and 312mm wall to wall on a 10" rim.

can you mount your sr's on a 10" rim and measure wall to wall for me? :)

As a general rule, the sidewall measurement changes about 5mm for every 1/2" change in rim width.

just to drag up an old thread,

what did the measurements end up being when fitted to a 10" rim and inflated up to road pressures?

Cheers!

Good one Ed :spoton: .

I am interested in this as well as i have bought then for my car but not fitted or run on them yet.

Have you driven on the Mickey Thompsons, if so how do they handle/wear.

i have them on a 15x8 rim and they measure slightly under 28 but mine are 18 mnths old so allowing for wear they would be spot on

they are a great street tyre last for ages mine are only half way down to the wear indicators and they dont grow at all with rpm so you can get the clearances really tight. great in the wet and hook up well considering the hp thats in mine

Sorry guys I must have forgotten all about this thread, Ill be home on the weekend... putting a reminder in my phone right now and ill measure them.

Ive only done about 200km on them before I pulled the car back off the road... Didnt really "test the handling" in that time so will have to wait abit on that one.

I intend to put these on 15x10 rears, I was also wondering what sort of springs you guys are using? I'm looking at A9X firm standard height springs with bilsteins, on a 9 inch.

so does anyone have a working opinion of these yet?

traction in the dry, traction in the wet..
(that's all I can really think of, how long they last doesn't seem to be something anyone would have reached yet)

They have never touched

Spark eater.

I was chatting to a mate a few weeks ago who has run these before and he commented that they were excellent in the dry but very average in the wet.

I run a 295/50/15 currently and have to run a standard height spring. I had a 1 inch lowered spring in, hit the wheel arches on on big bumps. Note that the 295 has a 147mm side wall.

I will be getting a set when I need to replace my tyres. The car doesn't see much wet driving so it shouldn't be a problem.

Cheers

Evan.
