Why are my 26x12 R15's actually 25x11's?

Ahuh found some Mickey Thompson sportsman S/R's 26"x12"x15"
Put it though a online converter and came out as equivalent to 305/46 R15 which was perfect for me, a touch wider but not quite as tall.
Ordered a pair through VPW and they arrived today and I straight away thought hmm they look small, checked and they say 26x12x15 on the sides...
Get home and pull the tape out and they are 25" overall diameter and only 11" wide (that's max width including the bulge of the sidewall, actual tread is even less)
Now am I missing something here? Am I wrong to expect that a 26"x12"x15" tyre should actually physically measure to be 26x12x15???
I dislike imperial enough already are the yanks really that backwards?
I took pics with my ruler on the tyres, I'll post em up once I got the laptop.

It will be interesting to see how much they grow when fitted.

Suppose it's my fault, bit of a bummer as 305/45 R15 would have been perfect and I love the tread pattern on the sportsmans... Hmm maybe I just settle for a smaller tyre. But I don't wanna buy rims to suit this width then want to get wider Tyres later.. Hmm

I would be putting my money on the tyre growing when fitted and inflated, the measurements should be within 0.25"
What width rims do you have?

I emailed VPW he said they list the diameter as the maximum possible diameter you would get with full pressure and doing a burnout etc...

Even your average 265/50 street tyre looks a lot bigger and better mounted on a 10" wheel than sitting by itself

These MT seem to work out at 270/50 15
I'll have another play when I'm home next, see if I can get the 295's to fit with mods otherwise I'll keep the MT's

can you mount your sr's on a 10" rim and measure wall to wall for me?

what did the measurements end up being when fitted to a 10" rim and inflated up to road pressures?
Cheers!

they are a great street tyre last for ages mine are only half way down to the wear indicators and they dont grow at all with rpm so you can get the clearances really tight. great in the wet and hook up well considering the hp thats in mine

Ive only done about 200km on them before I pulled the car back off the road... Didnt really "test the handling" in that time so will have to wait abit on that one.

so does anyone have a working opinion of these yet?
traction in the dry, traction in the wet..
(that's all I can really think of, how long they last doesn't seem to be something anyone would have reached yet)

I was chatting to a mate a few weeks ago who has run these before and he commented that they were excellent in the dry but very average in the wet.
I run a 295/50/15 currently and have to run a standard height spring. I had a 1 inch lowered spring in, hit the wheel arches on on big bumps. Note that the 295 has a 147mm side wall.
I will be getting a set when I need to replace my tyres. The car doesn't see much wet driving so it shouldn't be a problem.
Cheers
Evan.
