REDA9X - i have just gone through my questions and enquires about this car and have across the previous question in regards to my engine, apparently the car was sold on the 28th July 1974, and the engine was changed in Nov 74, if this means anything i am not sure

The reason I asked is some L34 blocks had an X above the 308 casting.

Your HT prefix is a stock 308.

If you can find the cast date on the block it may help as well.

On my VH 253 this is below the passenger side head at the front.

eg 18D2 is 18th April 1982 for a blue motor.

normally, it would be NT for a new block, but some of the later ones had R on the end instead.

I have seen a 308 with an X cast above the 308 on the side, it wasnt a L34 block though I think it was date coded for '72. I belive it came from a Monaro, now in my mates HZ.

Is it at all possible they had L34 style blocks left over that were not stamped at the time? and later put into other cars eg a Monaro. It would make sense for the X...I would not have thought that they made an exact number of blocks for the cars, to have some unstamped left over may be a possibility?

Cheers

if it was date coded 72, it's more likely to be one of the ones earmarked for the XU1 V8 project but stamped as an LH block, so prior to L34.

Sorry RedA9X, I meant any of the 308 blocks that carry an X from the factory 'cos the odd one seems to come up every now and then.

I still cant get my head around why some have an X and others do not, it would appear they were marked that way for a reason. Better blocks with more meat?

Cheers

I remember reading in AMC some ford inlet manifolds for the cleveland motor were stamped with an X too for no apparent reason. I reckons its some sort of conspiracy

just makes it easier to identify when the paqrts are on the shelf at the factory so they go in the right car. Blocks are not the only part to have such markings
