Hi there,

Just trying to finsh off my LX project and need to add the radiator overflow bottle somewhere. Radiator is a commodore alloy, so the overflow and refiller are on the passenger side (Battery still in the engine bay too). Any suggestions as to where to mount the bottle and what type fits or can be hidden?
Any help would be appreciated. Pictures would help even more.

Cheers,
M.

No pics but I'm looking to use a Commodore VR/VS (I think?) with the long filler neck hidden under the battery tray - there is just enough room between the battery and the inner guard for the filler neck with a bit of tweaking.

Hi M,

I chose to run an overflow bottle in the engine to give it a balanced look, no other reason.

Just drill a couple of holes and use some self tappers an the job is done.
(bought the overflow container from Rare Spares about $49 and you need to change the radiator cap as well)

Here's a pic.

Thanks Mick,

Your Engine bay is a simialr look to mine. I guess in the first instance, I will look at doing what you have done, until I find the right bottle to hide.

Picks of the Comm VR/VS bottle. would be handy too if anyone has them.

Hi Again,

You were right about the overflow bottle price from rares at $49. Does the hose from near the radiator cap go to the underneath of the bottle ?

Is the standard radiator cap pressure different ? i.e what pressure Cap should i use with this bottle.

Thanks for the help.

M.

You can get the copy of the A9X overflow bottle from Repco for $33 - they are a universal unit which can mount in a few different ways. I use one of those for the Windscreen washer and 1 for the rad overflow and have them mounted underneath the battery tray and on the opposite side under where the charcoal canister goes.

I'll try to get a pic in the next few days for you.

Great thanks , Toranamat69. Appreciate it.
Here is my engine at the moment. I have made a few more changes since this photo, but pretty much the same.

Cheers

Yes the overflow hose from the radiator goes to the underside of the overflow bottle. I ran the hose behind the battery to the bottle so it is reasonably hidden.

I was using a standard 13lb cap for the radiator before adding the overflow bottle and just bought a recovery cap (from my local auto shop) to allow coolant to go to and from the overflow. Sorry I don't know what pressure it is but it's just a stardard type radiator cap to suit.

How do you find it's function having it so low from the top tank?

Oops I've just realised I was talking about the windscreen washer bottle above (brain fade!).

This is what I've done in the hatch, it works OK but is a bit too low for a recovery cap to work (the windscreen washer bottle idea would be similar height, maybe a little higher):

Works fine - I drove it around for a year or so like that before I pulled it off the road to do my latest round of mods and upgrades.

I can't see you having trouble whereever you mount it in the car. The vacuum pulls the water back in as the radiator cools so as long as your coolant system can take the pressure it needs to during normal running, it is going to be able to suck the water back in from any normal overflow bottle location.

Oh and I don't have a top tank on my rad, only left and right. Not that that matters as the coolant in the engine is higher than the rest of the system except for the bleed point.
