So you have about 2" of slack? E.g with the wheels straight and rocking the steering wheel left and right? Sounds a bit like the steering shaft coupling to me or worn rack mount bushes.

Sounds like worn lower ball joints. Jack one side of the front of the car up, and check for movement (warn) ball joints. If there is movement, get them replaced, before they let go.

Sonds like the horn contacts need adjusting/bending.

If there is a real loose spot to the left and right it might be a loose cotter pin or two. That is where I found my problem.

Mick - check the steering knuckles. They may have come a little lose. This happened to me a little while back. Tightening them up fixed the problem.

Couplings/loose cotter pins/steering knuckle unijoints, will show problems whenever you change the direction of force on the wheel, however, you only have problems in one specific area of the turning arc.
If I am interpreting what you describe correctly, then a damaged portion in the steering rack would seem the only explanation.

Take it to a steering and suspension place, they'll soon tell you all the things wrong, and the damage to the wallet. Will save you rooting around changing everything.
