Dear gents oh and ladies,

i have a set of CD 175's on a 202 + 60 thou with 41/83 cam, thing goes like a rocket except when i adjust the mixtures to factory setting(2 1/4 turns out)it looks like its running on diesel. i have completely re kitted them and still heaps of smoke.i have tried everything i could think of but i need help. i have them leaned right off now so there is no smoke but that cant be good for the long term.

Just wondering if any one has some ideas cause im completely out of em.

Thanks

regards

Are they original XU1 carbs or are they off something else? eg: Landrover or other make.

One or more choke controls are active or faulty causing rich mixture?
Fuel bowl float levels incorrect - too high? wrong mixture needles? mixture needles incorrectly installed in air valve?

Sorry for late reply, been away working.

good question on genuine XU1, the main jet's are 6D which matches up to technical data in the GTR XU-1 book!

chokes are all closed and not faulty.

Float levels are set correctly.

Is there a correct way of installing the needles!!!! The needles are currently installed as such;

with the screw tightened, the leading edge of the needle is set level with the piston base.

Is there a certain way they need to sit in the air valves?

Thanks again for your help.

Greg

G/day Greg

Glad to hear you've got some technical info to work with.
Sounds like you've probably got them set up correctly. The shoulder of the needle shank sits level with the face of the air valve.
BTW the metering needles are 6D. The jets are .090".
If you've got .100" jets instead of .090" that will make it too rich.

Any chance you bought the metering needles from Midels?

Other than that I can't think of anything else ATM.

Cheers
Dave.

G'day Dave,

Thanks for your reply mate, i will double check, but i'm sure the air valves are .090, i purchased the carbies last year with the current needles in them,
i have been told to contact the Sydney carbuettor company in Sydney as they still have a selection of needles and air valves, i have also been told to stay away from MIDEL's, would that be good advice?

Thanks for all ya help mate, much appreciated.

regards Greg
