Can some one please confirm if the black grain SLR Ashtray should of had any silver edging on it???

The ones Ive seen are all black?? Has the edging rubbed off or was it never there? Im just comparing it to the repro ones available.

Hi there, yes it should definitely have the chrome edge on it as well as the SL/R letters, as it was from factory.
Cheers Mick.

It would make sense that the silver is there, as it ties in with the silver edge around the dash fascia/glove box lid.

Most importantly, in addition to the silver on the edging, you will need to really carefully 'inject'
some matte black in to the area around the letters and inside them... yep...its paint in there.
I would suggest using a syringe, a very watered down paint, maybe even a water base, and just let it
get dry over a few days.

Hanra, I might do a couple of experiments with vegetable dye too. (printer ink) Let you know how I go.
The ink/paint will find its own level, and form a miniscus at the edges.

Many of the 'paint' finishes in the Torana are actually screen inks. That is why most use Portland Grey paint
to restore the SS and SLR dashes. Initially they were screen printed.

Very cryptic Red'

Assuming you meant the pin striping is chrome?

I've been trying to find out for years whether the process was actual chroming, which is entirely possible,
as you can indeed chrome ABS plastics.

But, an old mate of mine who had worked for places like Email (not internet mail...) and other manufacturers
back in the 70's showed me a few pictures of how they introduced so-called chrome details back then.

Most used chrome paints and inks, which cannot be used now due to safety issues, and used really low tech
means of application such as a small line of felt, saturated with the paint/ink, that was placed in all the
spots to be chromed, and the part was sat face down on to it, in a jig. Left for a second or two under its
own weight, then removed and dried in a hot box.

All the wood grain was screen printed, as was the SS and SLR silver. But not the chrome I believe.

Might be wrong on that, and would welcome any other input on the subject.
