Hey guys, about to buy a mig for cutting out the cancer on my LX. I'm pretty handy with the oxy torch being a radiator repairer, but obviously the MIG is the better way to go. Any thoughts on the gasless migs? I know the gas migs are a cleaner weld, but if there's anyone out there who might have used both I'd like to get some opinions! Cheers!!

Have used both but the gas is easier and does a quicker cleaner job
A good mig will cost 700 to a grand
Better costruction . better quality hand piece and insides last longer
Cheaper ones dont have the penitration unless you only doing panels. But once you have one you will be welding thicker sleal for sure.
I have a cigweld, 12 years old and done more work than it should.Paid 900 back then.
As always more cash ,better gear.

I have a Cig as well but only 135 amp but great for car work
it will take either the gas or gasless wire but I couldn't get the finer .6mm wire in gasless and I find that better for panels.
not being a welder of great expertise

Cheers guys, I think I will go with the gas one. What do you do for argon? Hire it, what roughly is it worth to hire per month? It might sit un-used for 6 months or so while other work is getting done, that's the only downside!

The gasless can work but is tedious on thin stuff, and as above the 0.6mm wire is better for this. Plain old CO2 is fine for mig welding steel panels etc, no need for argon.

i think you may be able to buy the small ones outright still
check with boc or cig to confirm

my little SIP mig has been going strong for over 11 yrs now, i used to just buy the throw away co2 bottles but was a pain in the arse so now i run a E size bottle, about $60 for a refill and around 150 a yr for rent on the bottle.

I've used both as well and agree that gas is the way to go. CO2 wil give a hotter weld than argon but works fine with a thin wire, if you're experienced with oxy can I suggest tig? similar welding style and you can buy a 140-150 amp inverter machine quite cheaply eg about $8-900 with tig hand piece . granted you're still up for bottle rental and gas but I find the tig I can do anything with. I bought an ac/dc to do ally as well but they're a lot more. If you're buying from boc their machines are re-branded Kemppi machines and are very good.

If you are experienced in Oxy, why not just use that? They are better/stronger welds and workable, MIG welds are not. If you were doing a shit load of welding, or time is an issue, than I could understand the need for the MIG, if not, Oxy is probably the go for you.
