Both my F/R rubber type bumpers need to re-plated. Do people generally exchange them? Or get your own re-pressed and re-chromed? Obviously being in Cairns, no one up here can do it... So they will have to be freighted regardless....

Opinions on companies????

brad if you have good ones to start with don,t exchange
make sure you mark the back of them with something you will
recognise that will still be there after they are rechromed!
and tell the people that you send them to! that you have done so
may get you your own bumpers back and not someone elses!
also if they have any dents in them try and have them fixed
before you send them off as it can save you a lot of $$$$$$
cheers

I have used Vinneys in dandenong melbourne and he does an outstanding job and has treated me honestly every time I have dealt with him. The pile of rare and one off rod stuff I see him doing is a good testament to his reputation. Cost me $400 to have the front bar on the LJ done about 18 months ago. It needed mild preparatory work - few deep scratches. Be careful if you try your own repairs as there are issues with suitability of some repair methods for plating.

I agree , do your own bumpers if they good. Also if you can find out from others who have used the same chromer as all chroming is not equal. Before I rechromed mine I checked out a local exchange bumper joint and the qaulity was poor to say the least. I ended up paying 450 ea for a top job.
Cheers

I've used vinneys in Dandenong (melb) to chrome my kingswood's bars he's excelent and because i wasnt in a hurry it was $300 to straighten and chrome mine and i got them back in around 4 months ill be using him again for my torana when the time comes, ive spokent to a bloke in bayswater who does bars for $370 forgotten the name but hes near the rollerskating place, hes also cheap with bolts and things,
he recomended zinc plating my bolts i havnt had it done but he said he can zinc a big bag of them for $70 compared to $3 each for chrome, are there any downsides to using zinc instead of chrome besides the shine difference?

Having zinc bolts on a chrome finish will stand out.

well all i can say don't use Hamilton chrome in Hamilton Newcastle. unless you like flakeing chrome all over the inside of your brake booster body shell, and my bumbers were ment to be all straightened out rear is ok but not perfect. but the front is all wavey on the top edge-the first bit you see. this was suppose to be all fixed, his response we are not panel beaters. now in the hands of fair trading which i have heard sweet F/A from. not happy!!!

This might seem a bit trivial but do a bit of a i/net search on chrome plating, its not just a matter of plating
a nice shiny bit of metal,i beleive for good chrome that there is 2 other metals plated onto the job
before the chrome goes on,both have to be polished before the next plate goes on to get the required
chrome finish, not 100% sure but i think it goes nickel, copper, chrome,(someone correct if rong) quiz the mob you intend using
to find out the process they use,you will pay good $$ for good chrome, chrome straight onto steel wont last and nor
will chrome onto copper over steel because if there is a bit of a "hole" in the copper on steel it will corrode like
all buggery.Only goin on what i have found out so if anyone knows who does excelent chrome plating the old way
post it up as i too need some bumpers plated and want them done proper,,as probly others do.

Unique Cars used Vinney's in Dandenong on there give away XU-1 and they raved about them, even did a short story explaining the process

They sound pretty hard to beat on quality and price
