First one is the standard issue Granny car, a 138 3 speed column shift LJ coupe with drums all around;

Body plate is
Body - 778-A
Trim 597-48E (cream?)
Paint 568-5384 (royal umber???)

VIN plate is 82311JL201973

Compliance plate
Manufactured date is 5/72, sorry, didn't get body number

Engine number is CB145444

Second one is a UC hatch - do you have any info on these?

SL 202 auto, metallic blue with tan trim.

Body plate is;
Model UC8UH77
Body No. 611341M
Trim 1934-68X
Paint 567-30525
L20, M40, GU4

VIN 8H77LHJ611341C

Compliance plate
Manuf. date 4/78, AUC007627M

Engine number XQL940572

Just wanting reassurance that everything matches, thanks very much.

Re the UC engine number, the X is the same size and font as the other engine number alphanumerics, but it is offset up slightly. Did Holden just whack an X in front of the QL prefix for the leftover LX engines to be used in UC's, or is it something different? It looks to be the original untouched engine.

Hi Dangerous.

Most of those numbers look OK. The 48E (Cream ??) trim is called Flax & yes, the body colour is Royal Umber. It is just a 'Plain Jane' S 2-door sedan with 138 6-cylinder.

The UC hatch is painted Atlantis Blue Metallic. The 68X interior trim number doesn't come up on the list I have at work. I'll check my master list when I get home, late tonight.

In answer to your query on the 'X' in the engine number, this one pops up often.

The HX/HZ 6-cylinder engines with automaic transmissions are virtually identical to their LX/UC counterparts, the engine plant treats them as the same engine & stamps them all QL (or QM, QD, QE etc). All the ADR27A anti-pollution equipment & the sump etc is the same for both cars. The manual versions have slightly different anti-pollution specs for Toranas, so they continue with their HL (or HM, HD, HE etc) prefix. When one of these engines is destined to be fitted to a Torana on the assembly line, they then stamp the extra letter 'X' by hand in front of the QL, so it's a factory stamping, but not done at the engine plant.

Dr Terry.

Thanks Doc. I might have an interesting story on the LJ in a week or so. Might also have to get used to 'royal umber' - or chocolate brown - too. We'll see :spoton:

The UC interior is tan with cloth tan seat inserts from memory. Might even have cut pile carpet too. I was pretty sure it was atlantis blue. Bloody good colour for LC/LJs, but I dunno if I like it on hatches.

And re the "X", if I understand you correctly, it's stamped there post engine manufacture if it's destined for a Torana auto, as this one is??

Thanks again.

OK, maybe I'd better throw in my 20 year collection of all my other Toranas and Torana spare parts as well, and all the contacts and connections I've made as an enthusiast, not a Club Prez??? :rolleyes: Then you can do the same, and Greg, and Damo, and and and ........... :blink:
