Im about to start rebuilding my little cousins blue 202 out of his VC Crummydoor and need some opinions on setting this thing up for him. Its used as a daily driver and for general P plate shenanigans with his dickhead mates. He gives no care for fuel economy or drivability. Awesome.

Currently its a stock bottom end, fresh ported head with bigger valves, "30/70" watson cam (really wish i got to source the cam originally, the true specs of it are unknown), stock blue manifold with XF weber and random extractors (with some bad massaging of 4 runners to clear carby intake manifold) and newish exhaust (2.25 or 2.5", not sure what it is).

Its backed by a rebuilt trimatic, 2800 converter and stock diff gears (3.08?)

He wants to take the next step to make it quicker so ive formulated a bit of a plan, it includes the following:

- Acl rebuild kit with flat tops, balanced bottom end, new balancer, existing "30/70" cam, around 10-10.5:1 compression
- existing head milled to give desired compression
- small holley 4 barrel. 390 or 465 brand new from summit. Whats the consensus here?
- 4 barrel intake manifold. ive found a couple redline 12 port 4bbl manifolds for cheap, are these ok or rubbish? Is an aussiespeed worth the extra $400?
- shorter diff gears, maybe 3.55's
- fresh set of extractors
- SPAL thermofan in place of engine driven fan
- not sure about standard blie motor ignition system, any worthwhile upgrades?

Im thinking this should give it a bit of giddyup, whats everyone think? Let me know if there are any flaws in this plan..

Thanks
Nick

You cant get acl pistons anymore afaik so thats of the list as for the 4 barrel might be a bit big imo and if he is not worried about drivability then maybe go for a bigger cam all the rest sounds good

Since when did ACL stop making slugs? Thats bad news if its true. I noticed some blokes selling ACL rebuild kits on ebay still so maybe theres some floating around still.

May aswell go SRP forgies and go for broke on E85!

Are hypatec pistons any good? Theyre supposed to be ok and are cheap.

mahle pistons are acl's.... same company,
yes hypatec are good, will handle some spray too if your game.
check on the diff ratio as 173 cars had 3.55, 202 manual has 3.36 and auto had 3.08.
nothing wrong with the blue motor dizzy for what you are doing.
if you are handy with a die grinder and a welder, you can get impressive gains out of the stock manifold, see old johnno's thread. steer away from the redline 4bbl's they are average. and put a powerbond or romac balancer on it.

by the sound of it the head (unknown) and cam will be the limiting factor here.

Alot of people are telling me a 390 Holley is too big for this application, I intended on fitting one to my LJ a few years ago but never happened. Assuming youve got the cam/head for it a 390 would be a good thing?

390 will be fine. On the small side. 465 would be great if it was a bit of a hotty, but we dont know much about the head or cam so cant really comment. Hell, i'd run a 600 happily on a semi proper hotty type engine.

Im considering changing the cam out for one of a known spec and getting the head on a flow bench. The cam will stay hydraulic. The port job is only around 6 months old and it looked alright but it might pay to take it to a reputable shop to get flowed to see whats going on with it.

Should make for some good skids behind the local Maccas. =P
