hi can any body out there help me, ive pretty much killed my aussie 4 speed in my SLR and atm i dont have the time or money to rebuild it but i do have a recoed 6 cyl aussie 4 in my shed. how hard is it to swap the imput shafts over to convert the 6cyl to a v8 gear box? i heard some where that if you stand the gear box up so its basically standing on the out put shaft and undo the 4 bolts that hold the imput shaft in you can basically just slide one imput shaft out and the other one in, im guessing there is probably a gasket that would need to be replaced (similar to a front seal on a trans), but surely its not that easy is it? i would have thought that there would be something else to fiddle with just to give you the shits but hopefully not?
any help would be greatly appreciated

no expert here but if you pull them out and compair them, count teeth look at shape and bearing size etc. read a manual first as once bearings start to fall out....

Bit more involved than that. You have to remove the layshaft that runs through the cluster gear so that the cluster gear can drop to the bottom of the gearbox to allow the dogs on the imput shaft to pass the driven gear on the cluster. At this point unless you are carefull and have a dummy layshaft, the needle rollers and thrust plates in the cluster will all move and the box would have to be totally dismantled and reassembled. If you are now lost, take it somewhere.

As rodomo states the gearbox must be fully disassembled as you will not get it past the cluster gear. Even if you do you will have two issues getting it back in. 1. is getting past the cluster the other is keeping the needle rollers in the input shaft there to be able to slot it back in. You other issue is if your v8 box is a M21 as a m21 input shaft will not go into a m20 cluster well. Infact you will find that you will chew the gearbox out.
