gday all,

As many of you will know i had my car put on gas late last year. Well i wanted the gas filler where the petrol filler used to be since i was going to straight gas, however i was told that it wouldn't fit because of the boot lock mechanism. So i ended up with this.

Now one of my mates is looking to put his car on gas, and i was wondering if i can get this mess sorted out so he doesn't have the same thing as me, and later i can get mind fixed.

My question is, can the actual screw fitting that the gas pump attaches to (when you fill the car), be proud of the car? That would mean it would stick out like the filler tube for the petrol tank. I think if that was done, the filler wouldn't cause problems with the boot lock. Currently my filler has that thread recessed from the back of the car.

Any ideas?

Steve

Sorry dont know the regs, do remember that years ago cars simply had the filler attached by a plate like you would for a trailer plug.
Im surprised that there isnt room for the gas filler if you rip out the petrol filler pipe?
What is worth checking on b4 you put the filler in tight spaces is what the reg for the nozzles at the service station are Like there are differences with the ones at Shell servos. Had to modify one of mine so it would fit the Shell one. Who knows if another company will design another one that wont fit but is in the guidelines.

Hi Steve, i've seen fittings on commercial vehicles which have been hung under the tray, or the rear bar, check out some of the sites for LPG gas parts (Airod, Impco) and see what they offer. The fitting i have on the Pulsar is the same one you have. BTW how much is LPG per litre in Vic? It jumped here in NSW from .50 to .60 cents overnight this week.

gday devilsadvocate, if it is mounted recessed in the standard hole the boot lock fouls on the back of the fitting. You have to remove the petrol filler pipe because it has a bend at the top so the fitting won't go in there anyways.

gday gm3300, thanks for that i think i will have a look around. Yes last i saw gas on thursday was 59.9, where as before i was sick (sunday) it wqas 45 or something.

You can get right angle mounting gas service points. this would solve your issue as the filler will come into teh car and go down, not straight like yours.

What about a LH fold down no. plate holder and put it behind?

Oldn64 - Mine does come into the car and go down, at least as far as i am aware...

rodomo - I considered this as well, but seeing as i have a towbar there is no room for my numberplate to fold down with the towbar, and i think the towbar would foul on the gas filler.

I am still certain that if i mount the fitting exposed, with the thread sticking out the back of the car, as opposed to recessed like it is now, it will fit. Does anyone know if gas fillers need to be fitted recessed to comply with regs?

My old LX when I had it, I made up a recessed filler, that I then drilled a BIG hole next to the original petrol filler (dual fuel) and mounted it behind the fold down plate, so you couldn't see it. But I was working as a Fitter/Turner at the time,so was able to make these sort of things, It CAN be done,if you know the right people,
also it had to be enclosed behind and vented outsideso any gas leaks didn't get into the boot area.

They also used to have them on some Falcons and so on; having the filler point next to the end of the towbar setup under the left of the car. This setup is no longer legal in Victoria AFAIK

Correct. I do nto understand why but they are no longer to be placed there. It was common for commodores to have it on he drivers side under the quarter panel. it was argued that if it a was hit or b torn off there would be a gas spill... seeing there is a lock out valve... who knows???

Cheers
