i'm looking to get some quality primers but all that i can find around here is hi chem and moto spray brands which i believe aren't all that good? i believe ppg is good stuff, also protec, spies hecker?

which would be the best for an acrylic job? what exactly will i need? etch primer, primer filler then topcoat?
also what is the best brand of filler or bog to use?

sorry for asking questions that have probably been asked lots but i've looked around and am having trouble finding answers.

so if someone could answer those questions and point me in the direction of a good website or company in the Mudgee NSW area it would be much appreciated.

cheers

M8...... i'm not a painters asshole, but i still fail to see why anybody would choose to paint a car in Acrylic?

Even the 2K primers are streets above the old suff!

statler i was only going acrylic because of how easy it is to use. how much more expensive is it to buy all 2K products compared to acrylic? with good breathing equipment would 2K be fine to spray at home?

without knowing how close to sydney you are it makes it abit hard
but ppg should have a distrubition centre over there or a authourized dealer....like here
failing that.....pick up the yellow pages
look under panel and paint suppliers

Paint suppliers. Most of the guys who supply house type paint also supply automotive/industrial type stuff.

Also in very small towns often the pannel shops will sell product.

Considering i have no idea where Mudgee is in relation to the position of uranus at a given time (ie i dont konw where it is lol) have a look here
http://www.protec.co...1/i1001238/#NSW

Under NSW and find one close??

Googling the other brands your interested in will give similar results.

Nothing wrong with painting a car in acrylic, and if its your first go/you have only done a few i wouldnt reccommend anything else.

2k primers are a cut above though, and should be considered.

Out of the list you have above i'd go protec all day every day, because its just as good and half the price of the other two you suggested. So if you make a screw up it wont cost you as much lol.

As far as what products to use and how to use them, the same thing i always say, FIND A SUPPLIER, AND USE WHAT THEY RECOMMEND HOW THEY RECOMMEND IT. Also get the tech data sheets for the products and read them.

No point asking us what to do and how to use it or any of the usual questions "duuuhh how much thinner do you put in paint" or "what sandpaper do i use" when it varies so much brand to brand product to product and all the info you need is right there in the tech data sheets or at the counter at your local paint supply shop.

I like Evercoat Maxim gold bog, but anything evercoat is good. And use something from U-pol for spot putty, dolphin glaze or hot shot are good.

Cheers.

Just skip over to Bathurst if you have to Kieran, only takes 35 min.

Mudgee should supply PPG. It's a good brand and lots of places use it.

Hi, been awhile since have been online of the forum,
I would second Bomber on the Protec, we had the SS paint done by Protec,
they tinted the 2k paint for me in Chamois, and also the Tuxedo Black,
good paint easy to work with, and
Protec is owned PPG, they bought the brand and is now PPG's Budget Brand,
so they could use their main PPG brand as a premuim product line.
"how much more expensive is it to buy all 2K products compared to acrylic?"
The last time I priced brand name Acryilics compared to 2k,
the Acrylic paint was dearer for 4 litre than the 2k equivalent,
you do need to add to the cost of 2k the other items like hardener,
but the overall costing made 2k cheaper for the Chamois and Tuxedo Black on the SS paint job.
We did the paint job like this,
Etch Primer on the bare metal,
followed by High Fill Primer,
then the Black,
finally the Chamois.
looks so much better than the sad old paint.

Thanks for the input mate. I went to Bathurst auto west paint supplies and got all my protec gear I needed. Great shop with quality products, and expert advice (just like this forum lol) I went with protec acrylic primer/filler which you don't even need thinners for and it is designed to be used on bare metal as a completely new paint system. So I'll let you all know how it goes. It should be a great product and it is cheap also.

Cheers

You can get PPG from Sydney Autolac. I would use PPG over Protec any day but that's my own opinion of course :sofa:
